THESIS GUIDELINES
1. INTRODUCTION
These guidelines are the implementing rules and regulations for Design 9 and Design 10.
The thesis would be a group effort or individual and as such, the student is responsible
for his/her conduct of research based on the consultations made with their respective
advisers. This Thesis Guidelines will help the student understand full responsibility they
will have to take when undergoing the final requirement for the Degree of Bachelor of
Science in Architecture.
2. THESIS CLASS
2.1 Coverage
a.) The thesis is a combination of all the knowledge that the student must have
learned from the course. The Thesis Class is composed of Design 9 and Design 10.
b.) Design 9 will consist of problem identification, thesis proposal submission, thesis
design studies/research and book writing, esquisses, title deliberations, final
deliberation and a student course performance examination.
c.) Design 10 will conclude the translation stage of the design studies based from the
problem and data presented in Design 9.
2.2 Student Qualifications
a.) Students are allowed to take the thesis class if they passed all the subjects from
first year to fourth year based on their curriculum year.
b.) Students are allowed to take Design 10 after passing Design 9
2.3 Students Responsibilities
a.) Students must fully understand the content of these guidelines.
b.) Students must inform their parents or guardians regarding the financial
implications of the of the subject taken.
c.) Students must attend meetings scheduled by their respective subject adviser and
thesis advisers
d.) It is the students responsibility to check for schedules posted by the Architecture
department weather its online post or written post on the bulletin board .
e.) They are to submit on schedule various submittals throughout the course.
f.) Students are required to take consultation with their thesis advisers but it will not
limit them from consulting other professional and other faculty.
g.) They are accountable to envision on the originality of their thesis. Mere
duplications of previous thesis works aren't allowed. If the thesis passed the
proposal stage and after it had been detected that it's already done before within
the faculty or elsewhere, then the students will be automatically dropped from
the subject.
h.) The students bear the ultimate responsibility for meeting all the requirements
necessary for completing the course.
i.) All communications regarding thesis proceedings from students and their parents
should be properly coursed to their respective advisers.
3. THESIS COUNCIL
a.) The thesis council shall be composed of the Architecture Department Head as the
Chairperson and faculty advisers of Architectural Design subjects as members.
b.) In cases of complaints and the Department Head is also a Thesis Adviser, the Dean
will preside over the Thesis Council.
3.2 Functions
a) Approves the schedules, content and formats of submittals,
evaluation/deliberation guidelines, and other thesis concerns as recommended by
the thesis advisers or jury members.
b) Decides on complaints and other concerns coming from students,
parents/guardians and or thesis advisers or jury members.
c) Amend the thesis guidelines as deemed necessary.
THESIS EVALUATION COMMITTEE
4.1 Composition
a) The Thesis Evaluation Committee shall be composed of the Department Head as
Chairperson and the thesis advisers of the preceding year as members.
4.2 Function
a) The Thesis Advisers reviews the Thesis Proposal submitted by the students and
approves them on the basis of the following:
Relevance
Originality
Researchability
Practicability
Feasibility
Defensibility
Contribution to body of knowledge
b) The Thesis Adviser should finish the evaluation not later than a week after the
submission date.
THESIS ADVISERS
5.1 The Thesis Adviser shall handle a thesis class composed of not more than 30 students.
5.2 Incoming Thesis Advisers shall be known before end of classes of the preceding semester as
they are going to hold a Pre- Thesis forum to discuss format of thesis proposal submission for the
succeeding thesis class at a date to be ascertained.
5.3 Qualifications
a) The Thesis Advisers will be assigned by the Head of the Department of
Architecture upon the recommendation of the Chairperson.
5.4 Responsibilities
a) The thesis advisers are to guide the students in this endeavor and ensure the
proper implementation of the Thesis Guidelines.
b) The Thesis Advisers are to hold Thesis Forum together with the Department Head
and/or the Dean when the need arises for more clarification on the manner of the
Thesis proceedings. Announcements for meetings/Thesis Forum shall be made at
least one week before the schedule.
c) Thesis advisers may conduct collaborative mentoring or team teaching.
d) They have to review, comment and approve thesis proposals. They are to report
of any findings on duplications with previous thesis titles.
e) They are to report and comment on the insufficiency of data and incomplete work
of the student.
f) They will prepare the format and/or schedules of consultation, submittals,
deliberation for the approval of the Department Head.
g) Introduce the thesis proponent at the start of the deliberation and be present
during the entire procedure to ensure that the conduct of deliberation is carried
out properly. No simultaneous deliberations of students of one thesis adviser
should be carried out.
h) Will collate the result of deliberation per day and submit the same to the
Architecture Department Dead for posting on or before the following day.
i) Submit all required reports on time.
THESIS PROPOSAL
6.1 The initial step in the Thesis class is the preparation of the Thesis Proposal.
6.2 The students are required to prepare at least three different thesis proposals.
APPROVAL OF THESIS PROPOSAL
7.1 Approval of Thesis Proposal
a) Proposals shall be approved by the Thesis Adviser or with the help of other
department faculty members.
b) In case of a split result, the Department Head shall make the final evaluation.
c) Approved proposals can proceed with their research and book writing.
d) In case of same nature of proposal, there will be a limit of 3 students to be allowed
to continue such proposal. The first 3 who submitted the proposal first will be
recognized thesis proponents. This can be counterchecked through Form T-1
wherein the time and date of submission is indicated. Because of this, the students
are encouraged to submit proposals earlier, rather than wait for the submission
deadline. A similar thesis undertaking is any of the following:
The scope of the project is exactly the same or with minor variations with
only the site/location being different.
Same site/location but two projects could merge into one undertaking.
e) Approved proposal should form part of the documents for presentation during
thesis deliberation.
7.2 Deadline for approval of Resubmitted and New Proposals
a) Resubmitted Proposals or New Proposals seeking Approval from TEC shall be
submitted not later than 30 days after the first day of classes.
b) All proposals should have been approved by the TEC not later than 15 days after
the first day of classes
c) Other approved thesis proposal cannot be resubmitted by other students.
RESEARCH AND BOOK WRITING
8.1. The proponent shall be guided by the research methods/procedures as indicated in the
Thesis Manual. However, content of book is not limited to the outline. The Thesis Advisers and/or
the proponent can modify or make adjustments necessary to suit a particular thesis.
8.2 Intellectual plagiarism, if found existent in the work of the student, shall be subject to a
academic sanctions as embodied in the university policies.
8.3 Two copies of the final draft of book shall be distributed to jury on deliberations day.
8.4 Final copy of the book shall be submitted one week after the final deliberations. One original
and two copies of the book shall be submitted. One copy will be for the library, one copy for the
college file and the original to be returned to the student. The book must have the signature of
panel of jurors, before submitting to the advisers.
8.5 Recommended Book Structure:

RESEARCH CONSULTATIONS
9.1 The Research Proponents shall undergo research consultations with their respective thesis
advisers.
9.2 The Thesis Advisers shall schedule consultations per major topic in the thesis manual.
9.3 Advisers shall properly record and note comments.
DELIBERATIONS
10.1 Deliberations of Submittals
a) A schedule for submittals of all requirements for deliberations has to be arranged
by the Thesis Advisers and approved by the Thesis Adviser.
b) Submittals prior to deliberations schedule shall be the minimum requirements set
by the Thesis Advisers.

a) Presentation Requirements:
First semester presentation media shall be printed. Printed copies shall be
distributed to the jurors on deliberations day. Deliberation presentations
shall be on Power point presentation.
For the final second semester deliberations, presentation shall be done in
30”x40” boards.
No cut and paste allowed students draw directly on the board
The board must be design in accordance to their proposal
b) Students must submit their requirements 3 days before the start of the
deliberation week.
Incomplete/Unsubstantial submission of thesis requirements shall be
decided by the panel of advisers if acceptable for deliberations.
Traffic and other excuses will not be accepted as reasons for not
submitting on time. If for other reasons, the proponent cannot come for
the submission, arrangements must be made with a representative having
valid document (letter of request/consent) to be able to submit the
requirements on time.
All written documents must be saved in the computer with double backup
files always. Reasons for late submission attributed to such irresposbility
will not be entertained.
Additional submittals of optional requirements can be done on
deliberation day
An executive summary of the thesis of not more than two pages shall be
prepared and distributed to three jurors on deliberation day.
10.2 Schedule of Deliberations
a) The thesis Advisers should inform the students on the proposed schedule of
deliberations.
b) The deliberations should be scheduled before the final examination’s schedule on
the school calendar and to be approved by the adviser.
10.3 Drawing for Deliberations Slot
a) The proponents are to draw for their deliberation’s slot when they have submitted
the minimum requirements.
b) Once the student has drawn their slot, he/she has to sign a list containing the
name of the student and the day and time of deliberations to be indicated if it
warrants it or to be announced (venue).
10.5 Qualification for Deliberation
a) The student will be allowed to deliberate if he/she has passed the advisers
consultation grade and has satisfied the minimum submission evaluation. The
minimum submission evaluation will be based on the following:
Degree of completeness
Creativity and quality of presentation materials.
b) Conduct of deliberations shall be guided by the following:
All candidates FOR THE DAY must be at the holding area at exactly 30 minutes
before deliberation schedule. Non-appearance within the scheduled day
forfeits the right of the proponent for deliberations, hence, the candidate will
be given a final grade of dropped DEPENDS ON VALID REASON.
Minimum attire for ladies: CORPORATE dress/ensembles or business suit with
closed shoes.
Minimum attire for men: barong or long sleeves with full dress tie and leather
dress shoes.
The CEA of BPSU does not charge a Thesis Fee which is the practice in most
architectural schools and in some colleges in the university. In lieu of this, the
students are requested to give food or token to jury members as a sign of good
gesture for extra time and effort exerted by them.
After deliberations, candidates must not leave the premises without the
permission from the respective advisers.
All books and presentation materials must be secured and brought home by
the students after deliberations.
10.6 Deliberations Jury
a) Composition
The jury for the deliberations shall be composed of three members.
The jury can either be from the CEA of BPSU or invited jury outside of the
university.
Current Thesis Advisers cannot sit as a members of the jury.
Invited jury can be Architects in the academe or Architects in their professional
practice.
In case there is an invited jury, the jury composition for on proponent should
have at least one member from the architecture department.
One member of the jury shall act as the chairperson. In case there is an invited
jury, the chairperson or the thesis adviser shall inform the guest juror of the
methods in evaluation.
The Thesis Advisers shall prepare a list of probable jury and alternates from
the department and inform the faculty members of their assignment. The
faculty member assigned to sit as jury will have to sign the list to acknowledge
the acceptance of assignment.
DELIBERATION EVALUATION
a) The jury members are to evaluate the proponent based on the evaluation sheet
given to them.
b) The jury will be given ten minutes before and after the deliberations for a jury to
Conference to discuss the merits of the thesis project and the outcome of the oral
defense.
c) After the discussion, the chairman of the jury will inform the adviser about the
result of the jury deliberations if in their general evaluation of the student passed
or failed the oral defense. Each member shall accomplish the evaluation form
immediately after the deliberations.
d) The lowest grade the jury must give to the student is not less than 65.
e) Jury comments shall be immediately distributed to the students for proper action.
A copy will have to be filed by the adviser.
f) The students to stay in the premises of the college until he gets the verdict of the
jury and the copy of the jury comments.
g) The student will pass the oral defense if:
The jury has unanimously given the student a failing mark.
Two jury members have given the student a failing mark and only one member
has given a passing mark.
h) Result of the jury evaluation of the Thesis Proponent will be posted no later than
a day after their deliberations.
i) Rounding off of grades is not allowed. The majority decision shall prevail.
j) The result of the deliberation is final and unappealable.
THESIS GRADE
12.1 Pre-Deliberations Grade
a) The pre-deliberations grade shall be the average of all the consultations made by
the student and the pre-deliberations minimum sun=bmittal.
b) The student must have passed the above before he/she can be allowed to
deliberate.
12.2 Thesis Deliberations Grade
a) The average grade from the three jurors will be the Thesis Deliberations Grade.
b) The Thesis Advisers are to submit a compilation of the evaluation sheets of their
respective thesis class with the corresponding summary of thesis deliberations.
c) No re-deliberations, for whatever reasons, shall be granted to any proponent who
has failed the deliberations.
12.3 The Final Grade of the student will be computed based on the following:
a) ARDS 511
First Semester 30%
Exams and Esquisses 15%
Consultations 15%
Second Semester 70%
Consultations/Pre-Deliberation
Submittals 15%
Thesis Deliberations 40%
Final Draft of Book 15%
12.4 No final grade of incomplete is to be given. Once the student undergoes thesis deliberations,
the final grade shall only be either passed (3.0 or higher) of failed (5.0).
12.5 Those who did not pursue the deliberations shall be considered dropped from the course.
12.6 If the student got a unanimous or majority failing mark from the three jurors, his final grade
will also be failing. In this case, the adviser’s grade will not be considered.
THESIS BOOK SUBMISSION
1. The thesis book shall be submitted for approval to the Architecture Department
Chairperson for approval prior to bookbinding not later than five (5) calendar days after
the scheduled deliberations of the student.
2. All the rectifications and additions required in the thesis book shall be included in the
submission.
3. Three copies of the approved thesis book (one original and two duplicate copies) shall be
submitted not later than seven (7) calendar days from the last day of the deliberations.
4. The thesis book shall have the necessary signatures of the jury, the Department Chairman
and the Dean of the College.
5. Non-submission of the thesis book after seven (7) days shall mean a grade of incomplete
that will be reflected in the pink cards to be issued on that date.
BEST THESIS
1. There will be a competition for the Best Thesis to be able to achieve a higher quality of
outputs and as an incentive to the student.
2. The Best Thesis will be given to the top five thesis projects (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and two honorable
mention ) and other special awards as deemed by the thesis advisers and will be awarded
on a special program after the exhibit of works.
3. The Best Thesis will be computed on the following basis:
First Semester Deliberations 25%
Second Semester Deliberations 75%
4. Special Awards- Best Model, Best in perspective presentation, Best manual Presentation,
Most Innovative Presentation and the like will be decided after the exhibit. Finalists
should display their works to qualify.
