Abstract

Choosing a career wisely is an essential aspect that many people fail to consider while

making choices. There are many computer science careers in the job market but only a

few of them that are considered most important. Computer science through

development and improvement on existing technology has completely changed the

work and lives of individuals in the modern world. Computer science studies had

research will continue advancing technology and making lives of future generations

better Technology advancement through computer science has been experiencing

growth daily.

Technology is shifting from the use of absolute systems, that were less powerful in

processing, produced a lot of heat, consumed much power and were bulky occupying

large room space. Today the computation ability of machine has increased with data

processing being real time. The size of the machine has reduced with the new machine

reducing cost on power.

Introduction

Computer science is the use of practical and scientific approach in the study of

information and computations. A computer scientist offers solutions to various problems

completely revolutionized technology aspects in our daily lives today. Different business

in the modern world today heavily rely on technology in their processes. Technology is

essential in the automation of business to ensure that effectiveness and efficiency are

achieved.

Every day, inventions and creativity as brought about new ways of solving problems.

Technology experts have continued making research on how they can address some of

the issues that people face. Computer science study involves the use of well-defined

models like the algorithm and protocols that facilitate ion the acquisition, representation,

processing of data and information, storage as well as communication.

It is essential to understand why people have to study computer science for this will

make us aware of how it has positively impacted our lives. Computer science career will

help revolutionize technology through various career opportunities available on the

market today

Methodology

Both acquiring qualitative and quantitative methods of research are considered

important in obtaining data and information about the top ten computer science careers.

The qualitative approach through interviewing different people has shown that many

people do not seem to understand about carriers in computer science, but they

acknowledge how technology has impacted their lives. Some are quick to point out

various careers available in computer science such as networking, computer

programming, software development, computer analyst, data scientist.

analysis of data collected on the survey, we can make several conclusions; that only a

few individuals who understand what computer science career entails ("Highest Paying

Jobs - Computer Science Zone", 2019). The majority would want to get knowledge in

computer science as it the basis of the technology that is widely used in the modern

world today. Only 10% of those who filled the questionnaire could understand and

differentiate the top ten computer science careers such as; IT Project Manager, IT

Security Analyst, Web Developer, Network Architect, Computer Hardware Engineer,

Database Administrator, Computer Systems Analyst and the Software Developer

The top ten career opportunities are mostly related to each other as they involve the

sharing of resources and materials such as computers, networks, data, and information.

The top ten careers in computer science have brought about various advancement and

vital changes in technology. These computer science careers include the following;

Software developers​. These are individual who creates software and programs that

run on various devices and to perfume specific tasks as they are designed. They run on

platforms such as computers, mobile devices and various hardware's that provides

them with an enabling environment to their work. Software developers have the

responsibility of designing, development, testing, and implementation as well as

maintenance of the programs and software. They are required to have proper

communication skills which are essential when it comes to securing information on

Jobs", 2019). The software developer is required to have web programming languages

skills such as Java, C#, Python, and C++. According to ​[Link] ​the average

annual salary of a software developer in the US is $102,280.

Database Administrators.​ These are people bestowed the responsibility of evaluating

data as the users require it. These people develop databases for data storage as well

as retrieval when it is needed. Data is a critical resource in any organization or business

for it helps in planning and decision making. Database administrators should have

excellent skills in SQL and other database programming languages. They are also

required to have strong analytical skills. The average annual salary of a database

administrator in the US is $84,950.

Computer Hardware Engineer.​ These individuals with perfect knowledge about

developing, designing and evaluating computer hardware and related components such

as routers, circuit boards, and memory devices. They require both technical and

innovativeness aspects in addition to theoretical knowledge. The engineers should be

aware of emerging trends and be able to create hardware that supports new

income to a computer hardware engineer is $115,120

Computer Systems Analyst.​ These are individuals who asses an organizations

system that is in use and recommends necessary changes that should be made to

hardware and software to ensure the organization achieves efficiency in its work. This

career opportunity requires that one should be able to communicate regularly with the
management and the employees to gather information about the systems and hence

the analyst should possess strong interpersonal skills. The system analyst should also

have a strong convincing ability as he should be able to convince management and

administrators reasons for adopting technological solutions that meet business and

organization needs.

Computer Network Architect​. These people have bestowed responsibilities of

maintaining, designing network systems such as LAN, extranets and intranets and

WAN. They assess the organizational needs for communication and data sharing. They

evaluate tools and network products available in the market before they arrange for their

network architect also may resolve a network problem that may arise. They should

possess strong analytical skills to evaluate and resolve network problems when they

Web Developer.​ These are people who create web-based information systems. They

create websites technical structure making sure that webpages are accessible to their

users over various browsers and other platforms as required. Web developers are

required to have good communication skills, and they should also possess web-based

programming skills and languages. Some web programming languages they should

have to include HTML, PHP and a scripting language such as CSS and java scripts

Information Security Analyst.​ These are people who have the responsibility of

cyber-attacks. The security analyst should have strong problem-solving skills to help

approaches in technology to solve complex problems that exist in various fields such as

science, business, medicine, and many other areas. They design algorithms that are

useful in the detection and analysis of patterns in large datasets. Some are involved in

the creation of robots control programs. Their annual average salary is approximately

IT Project Manager.​ Are people bestowed the responsibility of coordinating groups and

individuals involved in IT projects. The teams they coordinate include programmers and

analyst in the IT sectors. They are also involved in finding solutions to various problems

that may arise, and therefore they should possess strong leadership skills in addition to

The choice of career, is best determined by the skills and the abilities that an individual

has. For a computer scientist, the above careers pay well, but they require much

commitment as well. Strong skills in addition to creativity and innovativeness are

necessary to help one succeed. Before one makes a career choice, he or she must

analyze skills required, job availability and tool needed to begin working.
