Procreate Blend Modes

To change the blend mode, or the layer opacity, tap the letter representing the blend
mode on the right side of any layer thumbnail.

D AR KEN
Multiply . . . . . . . Great for creating shadows, or for removing whites.
Linear Burn . . . . . Darker than Multiply but less saturated than Color Burn.
Colour Burn . . . . Darker than Multiply with more saturated mid-tones and slightly
reduced highlights.

LIGHTE N
Lighten. . . . . . . . . Pixels in the selected layer that are lighter than the ones on the
layers below are kept in the image.
Screen . . . . . . . . . Lightens the layer where it blends with the pixels beneath.
Screen is the opposite of Multiply mode, great for getting rid of
black and for glow effects.
Add. . . . . . . . . . . . Similar to Screen, but with a much greater effect.
Color Dodge . . . . Brighter than Screen.

C ONTR A ST
Overlay . . . . . . . . Combines Screen mode on lighter pixels and Multiply on darker.
Hard Light. . . . . . Similar to Overlay, but uses the selected layer’s intensity.
Soft Light . . . . . . . A half-strength application of Overlay.

D IFFERENCE
Exclusion . . . . . . . Produces an effect like a photographic negative, but with less
contrast to the Difference blend mode.
Difference . . . . . . Produces a negative effect relative to the difference between the
layers.
Subtract . . . . . . . . Subtracts the selected layer’s color from the underlying colors.

C OLOUR
Hue. . . . . . . . . . . . Takes the luminosity and saturation of the underlying colors and
the hue of the blend color.
Saturation . . . . . . Result color has the luminosity and hue of the layers below and the
saturation of the selected layer.
Color. . . . . . . . . . . Color uses the luminosity of the layers underneath and the hue
and saturation of the selected layer.
Luminosity . . . . . Luminosity uses the hue and saturation of the layers underneath
and sets the luminosity of the selected layer.
