Ship Handling Simulator Course Overview

This 4-day course teaches ship handling skills for ultra large container vessels up to 400m using a ship handling simulator. The course consists of both classroom lectures and practical exercises of increasing complexity on the simulator. Trainees learn to understand effects of various conditions and perform maneuvers like anchoring, berthing, unberthing with or without tugs in different ports, rivers and channels. Description The course is practical and theoretical and consists of exercises performed on a ship
handling simulator. Classroom lectures, to provide the necessary theoretical background
for the exercises, are inluded. The exercises i ncrease i n complexity as the course
progresses and as trainees become familiar with the manoeuvering characteristics of a
Container Vessel up to 400m in length and its response to engine and helm in various
conditions.
Objectives • To understand the effects of wind, current, shallow water, baks and narror channels
• To carry out anchor maneuvers under the influence of current and wind
• To carry out a river/canal passage
• To carry out berting/un-berthing maneuvers with and without use of tugs
• To establish a proper working bridge team
