Chapter 1:

Introduction

Although the human anatomy is arranged symmetrically about a central vertical axis, the
majority of persons will use one side of their body with greater frequency, facility or skill than
the other. From this universal observation has emerged the functional concept of laterality
dominance, demonstrated in physical terms just as with having a dominant hand with which to
write, or a preferred foot for kicking a ball, the idea of having a dominant eye has been around
for a very long time. Rosenbach (1903) is credited with being the first author to refer to eye
dominance. He claimed that most individuals have a dominant eye, even when the vision of the
two eyes is the same. The concept of dominance is very familiar to optometry students who need
to learn to conduct retinoscopy, direct ophthalmoscopy and other monocular techniques with
equal proficiency regardless of whether the right or left eye is being used. However, eye
dominance is also widely known among the general public, especially by those who have
occasion to use a monocular instrument, for example, a microscope or those who have
participated in activities for work or pleasure when one eye needs to be selected over the other,
such as in shooting or archery. Though like what was mentioned above, that an individual’s
handedness is not predictive of their eye dominance we're still going to assess if there is a
significant difference between a person's preferred handedness and their eye dominance (like
when a person is left handed he/she is also left eye dominant and vice versa) or there is no
significant difference between a person's preferred handedness and their eye dominance using a
method (A-B-C vision test) from a certain study by Walter Miles (1928).

Statement of the Problem

 What is the prevalence of between left-handedness and the left-eye dominance of the
sampled population?

 What is the prevalence of between right-handedness and right-eye dominance of the sampled
population?

 What is the prevalence of between left-handedness and left-eye dominance of the sampled
population?
 What is the prevalence of between right-handedness and left-eye dominance of the sampled
population?

 Is there a significance between the preference and the ocular dominance of the sampled
population?

Hypothesis of the Study

 There is no significant difference between the hand preference and the ocular dominance of
the sampled population.

Significance of the study

The study was conducted to assess the dominant eye relative to the hand preference. And
for the contribution of the study which can be useful for future researches. This will increase the
awareness of people and will generate the information regarding the relativeness of eye
dominance and hand preference.

Scope and Delimination of the Study

The assessment will be done at Mabalacat City College located in Dolores, Mabalacat
City, Pampanga. Our sampled population will be the 10% of the total number of the students in
Mabalacat City College and will be chosen randomly. The study will be conducted on a
convenient time within school days. The subjects who wear contact lenses or eyeglasses will be
eliminated due to disparity of vision experienced when wearing correcting lens.

This chapter presents literature and studies that have relevance and importance to the
study.

Most people are right-handed, preferring to use the right hand for skilled and

also unskilled activities. Most people are also right-eyed, preferentially using
their right eye for sighting tasks, or for carrying out monocular activities such as

looking down a microscope or through a telescope. However about 10% of the

popula tion prefer to use their left hand and about 30% prefer to use their left eyein such
situations.

hemisphere which controls Laterality, it is not because of an early damage of the left brain
hemisphere, but it is neither clear if it is because of a natural phenomenon, it could be, but
scientists are not yet certain about it.

CHAPTER 3:

Methodology

This chapter discusses the methods that will be used in this study. It explains how the collection
of data and the calculation of prevalence will go through after a certain assessment test that will
be conducted. It also contains the materials needed to carry on the study.

I. Determining the hand preference

 A questionare will be given to the subject, answering if he/she is right or left handed.
Questionaire:

 Which hand do you use to hold a writing instrument for drawing/sketching?

 Which hand do you use to hammer a nail into wood?

 Which hand do you use to hold a knife when cutting bread?

( ) Left ( ) Right

 Which hand do you use to hold a key when locking or unlocking a door?

 Which hand do you use to hold a glass if you want to drink?

II. Administration of Eye Dominance Test

 Miles’ A-B-C Vision Test (Area Blackness Comparison) will be used to determine the
dominant eye.

 The subject will be oblivious to our real purpose, we want him to respond naturally.

 Each subject will stand or seat ten feet away from the investigator.

 The subject will view a card in 5 seconds (the card will be held by the investigator) and will
look through a v-scope device with both eyes.

 The investigator will note which eye will the subject use to view the card.

 The subject will change its v-scope after each trial to force a new motor adjustment.

 The subject will be given 10 trials or 10 cards to view it in the scope.

 Every investigator will assess a subject using the test mentioned above.
