Deconstructivism
. It does not follow “rules” or acquire specific aesthetics .it is the unleashing of infinite
possibilities of playing around with forms and volumes.
exploring the asymmetry of geometry (inspired by Russian Constructivism), while maintaining
the core functionality of the space (inspired by Modernism).
During the First World War, Russian Constructivists, broke the rules of classical
architecture and composition and presented a series of drawings that defied the “geometric
norms” at the time..
Post war, the country was undergoing radical changes and revolutions, and the impact of these
revolutions on architecture was inevitable. Architecture was seen as a high form of art,
influencing and being influenced by society, and so, social revolution = architecture
revolution. Geometry, whether in art or architecture, became irregular.
In parallel to the Russian Constructivist movement, the Modern Movement was paving its way..
The World War has just ended and people were desperate for the stability and refinement they
so missed;. Ornamentation was stripped off, only to leave people with clean-cut, elegant yet
naked functionality.
Deconstructivism was not really an impactful architecture movement. It was a mélange of
Russian Constructivism and Modernism, with a little bit of influence from Post-
modernism, expressionism, and Cubism.
the style was characterized by a loss of symmetry or continuity. Design rules were broken and
“form follows function” was neglected, but somehow, the refinement and elegance
of modernism remained. The structure’s skin was manipulated and altered into unpredictable
geometric forms, but the building’s function was preserved.
Frank Gehry also called Frank O. Gehry, (born February 28, 1929, Toronto,
Ontario, Canada), Canadian American architect and designer .
gehry’s family immigrated to Los Angeles in 1947. He studied architecture at
the University of Southern California and city planning at Harvard University .
Gehry began to experiment with unusual expressive devices and to search for a
personal vocabulary.
In his early work he built unique, quirky structures that emphasized human scale.
His early experiments are perhaps best embodied by the “renovations” he made
to his own home in Santa Monica, California.
Gehry essentially stripped the two-story home down to its frame
and then built a chain-link and corrugated-steel frame around it,
complete with asymmetrical protrusions of steel rod and glass.
Gehry’s reputation soared in the late 1990s. By that time Gehry’s trademark style
had become buildings that resemble undulating free-form sculpture. This form
arguably reached its zenith in his Guggenheim Museum (1991–97) in Bilbao,
Spain. In that structure Gehry combined curvaceous titanium forms with
interconnecting limestone masses to create a sculptural feat of engineering
Post modern architecture
Postmodern architecture began as an international style from the 1950s, but did not become a style until
the late 1970s
{The functional and formalized shapes and spaces} of the modernist style are replaced by diverse aesthetics
Influential early large-scale examples of postmodern architecture are Michael Graves' Portland Building in
Portland,
Postmodern architecture has also been described as "neo-eclectic", where reference and ornament have
returned to the facade, replacing the aggressively unornamented modern styles. This often combined with
the use of non-orthogonal angles and unusual surfaces,
modernism is rooted in minimal and true use of material as well as absence of ornament, while
postmodernism is a rejection of strict rules set by the early modernists and seeks meaning and expression in
the use of building techniques, forms, and stylistic references.
One building form that typifies the explorations of Postmodernism is the traditional gable roof, in place of
the iconic flat roof of modernism.
Robert venture
Robert Venturi (June 25, 1925 – September 18, 2018) was an American architect, founding principal of
the firm Venturi, Scott Brown and Associates, and one of the major architectural figures of the twentieth
century.
The move away from modernism’s functionalism is well illustrated by Venturi’s adaptation of Mies van der
Rohe’s famous maxim “Less is more” to "Less is a bore."
He was also a teaching assistant to the already established architect Louis Kahn.
It incorporates many of the devices used by Modernist architects like Mies van der Rohe and Frank Lloyd
Wright, from horizontal ribbon windows, to a simplistic rendered facade. But Venturi chose to also
include ornament in the design –
by reintroducing elements traditionally associated with houses – from a gabled roof to an arch-framed
entrance – but stripping them of their original functions, he laid the foundations for the entire Postmodern
movement.
difference between post modernism and modernism
The differences between modern and postmodern architecture focus on issues of utility, originality, and
the struggle between local and cosmopolitan values.
Modern architecture is recognizable by 'Form Follows Function', which means that structures are given
their aesthetic merit based on their utility. The postmodern rejects this philosophy without offering any
specific replacement .modern architecture is part of a cosmopolitan look that is uniform and purposeful,
while postmodernism seeks a more unique look that emphasizes originality and local flavor.
Neo-futurism is a late 20th to early 21st century movement in the arts, design, and architecture. It could
be seen as a departure from the attitude of post-modernism and represents an idealistic belief in a better
future
. Metamodernism is a proposed set of developments in philosophy, aesthetics, and culture which are
emerging from and reacting to postmodernism. One definition characterizes metamodernism as
mediations between aspects of both modernism and postmodernism.
