American Opposition to Vietnam War

Melody chose to research American opposition to the Vietnam War because she found the 1960s-70s counterculture and anti-war protests fascinating. She conducted research online, finding credible websites to learn about the war and different aspects of opposition. Melody created an individual website to share her research because she is studying engineering and wanted to improve her computer skills. Her topic fits the theme of triumph and tragedy, as the Vietnam War caused much pain but the American people's protests and activism helped end US involvement and prevent future wars.

How I chose this topic:
I chose this topic because I think the history around the Vietnam War is an interesting
and important part of America’s past. The 1960’s – 1970’s were a time of counterculture and
opportunity to change social norms. The protests against the war made a very good argument
about why America should not interfere with the problems of other countries unless necessary. I
believe this concept is still applicable today, so I chose this topic to learn more about what we
can do to prevent more tragedies.
How I conducted my research:
Most of my research was done online. After I planned what my website would look like, I
started to look into each aspect I wanted to cover. I found credible websites, and read the
information before deciding if I would use the information. I tried to find information that gave a
full explanation of the war, and gave background information on each of my subtopics. I sited
the websites I used information from, and started to put the information on my website. I also put
effort into finding photos from the war era including propaganda, protests, and the soldiers.
How I chose my category:
I chose to do a website because I am going to go to college for engineering, and having
computer skills is an important aspect of being an engineer. I do not have much experience
creating projects on a computer, so I thought I would give it a chance. I spent time in class and at
home conducting my research, until I had enough to start putting my website together. Once I
started playing around with the different ways I could take my website, I discovered I had made
the right choice by trying the website.
How my topic relates to the theme:
I chose the American Opposition to the Vietnam War because I believe it is a great
example of both triumph and tragedy. The tragedy is easy to see, as any war causes pain, not
only the soldiers, but also to their families and friends back home. The Vietnam War killed
millions of people, and wounded many more. New war technology was successfully created, but
left a permanent stain on the land and people. The triumph may be harder to see at first, but the
more you dig, the more you see it. The protests of American people, the propaganda created
against the war, and the research done on war caused America to pull out of the war. The
knowledge the public gained from watching the tragedies of the war help to prevent this from
happening again.
