Haptic Systems Presentation Guidelines

The document outlines the paper presentation assignment for the ME327 class. Students will be assigned to teams to present on a paper from either the 2016 IEEE Haptics Symposium or the 2017 IEEE World Haptics Conference. Each presentation will include a 10-minute presentation of the paper, a 5-minute Q&A session, and a 10-minute interactive class activity. Students must select an orally presented paper, discuss their selection with the instructor, and send the paper PDF to the instructor once their presentation date is assigned. The presentation will be evaluated based on subject knowledge, the activity, organization, slides, presentation skills, and timing.

ME327: Design and Control of Haptic Systems Winter 2018

Paper Presentations
Paper comprehension and presentation are important skills for research and development, and paper
presentations will introduce the class to a wide variety of haptic systems. Each team will give a 25-minute
paper presentation/activity (10-minute talk, 5-minute Q&A, 10-minute activity) to the class. The timing may
be updated depending on the number of teams.

Selecting a Paper

The paper must be selected from the proceedings of the 2016 IEEE Haptics Symposium or the 2017 IEEE
World Haptics Conference. (While journal papers are more complete and rigorously reviewed, we will use
conference papers since their scope and depth are more appropriate for a short presentation.)

2016 Haptics Symposium:

q You can browse the proceedings and download pdf files using IEEE Xplore:

2017 World Haptics Conference:

For both conferences, we ask that you select a paper that was presented orally (rather than by poster).
Papers with higher impact and broader interest are typically given oral presentations. Please do not select a
paper from Allison's research group (i.e., where Allison is an author). Discuss with the instructors if you
need help selecting a paper.

Note: Access to the IEEE Xplore paper database may require that you sign in with your Stanford
credentials. Please see [Link] if you have trouble connecting
from off campus.

Confirming your Paper and Presentation Slot

After you have selected your paper, include information about it in your project proposal. After Allison has
confirmed that you can present that paper, you will be assigned a presentation slot. Then you should email a
pdf of the paper to her. For the naming convention of the pdf file, follow this format: LastXX-SRC-
[Link]
• “Last” should be the last name (surname) of the first author of the paper. The first letter should
be capital and the rest lowercase.
• “XX” is the final two digits of the year in which the paper was published.
• “SRC” is an all-caps abbreviation of the source of the paper. World Haptics Conference is
abbreviated WHC, Haptics Symposium as HS.
• “Keyword” is a single word taken from the title. Pick the word that is most descriptive of the
work, and do not use more than one word. It must be a word in the title.
Preparing your Presentation and Activity

q Create a 10-minute presentation. Be sure to practice it; do not go over time. Use the evaluation
form linked below to guide
q Use any format you like (PowerPoint, Keynote, pdf, etc.). I will ask for a copy afterward.
q You should present the paper as if you are the author, so you must learn the material well. Use other
resources as needed. You should be objective in discussing technical drawbacks/limitations.
q Your talk can expand on the paper as needed to explain the concepts or follow-on work. However,
the bulk of your presentation should be focused on information given in the paper.
q You can use the authors' website and other papers (in particular, follow-on journal papers) to find
additional information and useful figures.
q You should aim for a high level of professionalism and “production values” in your presentation.
We won't listen to practice talks, but if you have any questions about your slides, pronunciation,
technical content, etc., don't hesitate to ask the teaching staff.
q Be prepared for a rigorous 5-minute Question & Answer session.
q Prepare a 10-minute class activity. After your presentation and Q&A session, engage the audience
for 10 minutes by having them actively participate in an activity of your choice, which is relevant to
the paper you presented. The audience should have active participation during this part. Some ideas:
build something(s) for a demonstration (ideally something everyone can try), have the students in
the class perform a mini-experiment, pose interesting questions that will result in active discussion.
q The audience should not walk in late or miss class. Your participation grade in this class will be
affected by either of these circumstances. (Auditors must also not enter late, as this is distracting for
the presenter.)
q Your presentation will be evaluated not only by the instructor and CAs, but also by your classmates.
A sample presentation evaluation form is at
[Link]
q The presentation evaluation form also ensures that the audience comprehended the important
features of the paper.
q The two or three members of the team should spend about equal amounts of time talking during
each of the presentation and activity portions.

Grading

Subject knowledge 35 pts.

Interactive class activity 20 pts.
Organization 15 pts.
Slides 10 pts.
Presentation skills 10 pts.
Timing 10 pts.
TOTAL 100 pts.

The subject knowledge score will take into account the complexity of the topic tackled.
Note that the presentation is 10% of the overall course grade.
