Bioimaging

Homework 1 (Due on March 21th, 2019)

1. Find even and odd parts of

-1
1 x

-1

2. Consider f(x) = g(x)/g*(x), where g(x) is Hermitian and |g(x)| > 0. Is the Fourier transform of
f(x) has any of symmetry (i.e. Hermitian, anti-Hermitian, Real, Imaginary, Even, Odd, …)?

3. Sketch the Fourier transform of the following function.

𝑥
rect ( ) [1 + cos𝜋𝑥]
2
This is a raised cosine pulse. Also sketch the original function
4. What is the result when we sample cosπ𝑥 (x in mm) with the sampling rate of 2 cycle/mm?

(Important! Solve graphically both in space and Fourier domains.)

Try it for the sampling rates of 1 and 0.5 cycles/mm and comment on the results.

5. You got the following image from an MRI scan.

(a) Why do you see the corrugated artifact

(mathematically)? Note that MRI acquires data in 2D
Fourier domain (i.e. 𝐹(𝑘𝑥 , 𝑘𝑦 ) domain). This image
was acquired in voxel size = 128 x 128, and resolution
= 2 x 2 mm2. (b) Try to analyze the artifact as much as
possible from the image.
