Interview with Mr.

John Miller
1. What is your current job title?
Teacher/ Director of bands and one choir.
2. What is your education background?
Bachelor's degree in instrumental music education from Concordia College in Moorhead.
3. Do you have any special experiences related to playing instruments and their effects on the
brain?
You can tell when kids are working hard at making music. Band students tend to be in the upper
percentages of the class in academics. Not because band attracts the smarter kids, but because band helps
them achieve more academic success.
4. Have you noticed that kids who play instruments tend to be smarter?
I don’t know if they are smarter per say, But they can use their brains more efficiency, because it’s a
mixture of sciences, its math, reading, and science all stimulating the brain at once.
5. What do you think was the most useful class you took in college?
My methods classes, the ones i took that taught me how to play all the instruments. They were the most
practical because i use those skills to teach kids every day.
6. What got you involved in music?
My family has always been very musical, my parents were both very musical and always encouraged me
to get involved.
7. What is your favorite part of your job?
The kids! I love seeing the potential in kids and watching them grow. I love seeing their passion for
music.
8. What is your favorite instrument to play?
Piano for sure!
9. WHat challenges have you faced?
I was not fully prepared for all of the responsibilities I would gain when I went college. I was not always
the best student because i wasn't prepared for all of my other responsibilities. Also, I was not fully
prepared for all of the things I would need to do as a teacher that they did not teach me at college.
10. Do you have any advice or tips for me learning guitar?
Consistent practice
SMART practice that is critical of your work
Realising that it is not a sprint, it is a marathon, and you will reach setbacks, but you need to push through
them and work harder.
