Community Blanket Project Reflection

Emely reflects on her group's JSL project to make blankets for Renown Children's Hospital. At first, she was worried about the difficulty and who would be in her group. She was pleased to find her group included friends from her medical academy. They struggled at first to decide on a project, but learned blankets were greatly needed and appreciated by the hospital. Each group member took on different roles like starting the binder, portfolio, and presentation. They overcame obstacles like not being allowed to hold a planned movie night fundraiser. In total, they made 29 blankets for the children's hospital through their project.

JSL Reflection

At​ ​first when I heard about this project I was scared and worried of how difficult it was

going to be. So I immediately started thinking of who I was going to be in a group with and what

we were going to do. When we got our group it was perfect because Yazmin and I are in the

medical academy, Mariana is in the education academy but wants to pursue a career in the

medical field. Even though we had our group we were clueless about what we were going to do.

The senior Hannah had told me about her project and when I first heard about it and what they

did I thought it was unnecessary because I assumed the hospital had enough blankets. But I

quickly learned that blankets are very much needed in the hospital and are greatly appreciated. I

am so glad that we choose this project because it is so eye-opening and successful.

What I did was mostly talk to admin and also starting/staying for some of the movie

nights, and doing the biweekly updates. Mariana started the binder, portfolio, and the

presentation. She worked on all 3 of those the most. Yazmin talked to admin, talked with Raker,

and also getting in contact with the administration at Renown. In the end we all worked on the

presentation, portfolio, and binder to get it finished. We also all took turns doing the biweekly

updates.

Overall, our project was very exceptional and I am very happy with how the outcome of

the whole thing came out. Aside the fact that the outcome was good there are somethings I would

change if I were able to do this project again. Like I would plan the movie night with more time,

advertise to underclassmen more and get them more involved, had fundraisers to raise money for

a donation, and also do everything with more time. We faced many obstacles throughout the
project . For example, we planned a movie night so that the underclassmen could go watch a

movie, tie blankets, and eat snacks. But administration did not allow us to do it. So instead we

planned an after school club in Roger’s room which still allowed underclassmen to get involved,

tie blankets, and eat snacks. Overcoming these obstacles was a great learning experience along

with time management, working collectively as a group, communication between group

members, and etc.

In the end, aside from all of the challenges and thinking of everything we could

have done. The outcome of this project was great we had a total of 29 blankets made for the kids

at Renown Children’s Hospital, got good memories out of it, and also made a impact in our

community which is always a great feeling.
