Module III Assignment 1 Railway Engineering CO 4

1. Write down the requirements of an ideal rail section. [CO 4]

2. Write down the problems arising due to non-uniformity of gauge in railway [CO 4]
track.

3. Draw a typical cross-section of a railway track and show the P-way [CO 4]
components.

4. What are the considerations in selecting a gauge for a railway track? Explain [CO 4]
briefly.

5. Explain the term “Coning of Wheel” with a neat sketch. Why the coning is [CO 4]
provided?

6. What are the different groups of railway routes found in India (Discuss with [CO 4]
examples)? Mention the speed potentials of those groups.

7. What is meant by “Adzing of Sleeper”? [CO 4]

8. Discuss relative merits and demerits of Flat footed rails. [CO 4]

9. Calculate the number of sleepers required to construct a track of length 1 km [CO 4]

on a BG route with sleeper density (M+7).

10. Derive the expression for calculating minimum depth of ballast in railway [CO 4]
track.

11. Calculate the maximum permissible load that a B.G steam locomotive can [CO 4]
haul with 4 pairs of driving wheels with axle load of 23 tonnes each on a
straight level track at a speed of 90 kmph.
Also calculate the reduction in speed if the train has to run on a rising
gradient of 1 in 150.
What would be the further reduction of speed if the train has to negotiate a 4°
curve on the rising gradient? [Assume coefficient of friction = 0.22]

12. An 8° curve diverges out from a 3° curved main line in reverse direction of a [CO 4]
B.G line. The maximum permissible speed on branch line is 30 kmph.
Calculate the negative super-elevation to be provided on branch line and the
maximum permissible speed on main line.

13. A 7° curve diverges out from a 4° curved main line in reverse direction of a [CO 4]
B.G line. The maximum permissible speed on main line is 45 kmph.
Calculate the super-elevation and speed to be provided on branch line.

14. What is the equilibrium cant on a 3 degree curve on a BG track if 15 trains, [CO 4]
10 trains, 5 trains and 2 trains are running at speed of 60 kmph, 70 kmph, 100
kmph and 120 kmph respectively?

15. Write short notes on: Ruling Gradient, Momentum Gradient, Pusher Gradient [CO 4]
and Station Gradient.
