I. Project Title PROJECT BALIK-BAKAWAN: A Mangrove Rehabilitation

Project
II. Proponent: National Service Training Program-Community Welfare
Training Service
III. Project Duration:

The collaboration effort with the DWCC Community Extention Services Office shall hold
a duration of one week for project preparation and one day for project implementation.

IV. Project Venue:

This one-day mangrove rehabilitation project will be held a Brgy. Wawa, Calapan City.

V. Target Beneficiaries:

The prior beneficiaries of this project will be the marine ecosystem of Brgy. Wawa,
Calapan City as well as the people in the community.

VI. Jusification

The mangrove ecosystem in the province remains largely deforested, with a

reforestation rate at an alarming low level. Without the mangroves, the marine ecosystem
would be most affected. Mangroves are biodiversity hotspot providing shelter for incredibly
array of species hence, lack of mangroves in the shore means less chance of breeding and
hatching place for marine organisms. Mangroves also serve as a coastal defense for coastal
communities like our target community, Brgy. Wawa. This serves the first line of defense
preventing the devastating effects of flooding and storm surges.

Surely, if mangroves grow less in the sea, not just marine biodiversity will be
affected but also the people in the community for people in the seaside community depend
most of their lives to aquatic biodiversity. Like today, the mangrove population in our province is
relatively low as well as the rehabilitation projects and initiatives. Many mangrove ecologies in
our province have been largely deforestes while other areas wthin the parameter of the city
needs crucial awareness and help regarding restoration of mangroves.

VII. Project Objectives

 Support the programs of the government through the initiative of increasing the
reforestation rate of mangroves in the province.
 Help preserve the marine ecosystem through restoration of mangroves along the shore
for the community’s safety and continuous source of livelihood.
 Heighten the conscience mindsets not just of the people in the community but also the
students who will be participating in the activity regarding their environmental
responsibility.
