ABOUT THE SEMINAR
‘Education is enlightenment, enlightenment is empowerment’
The development of any nation depends upon its educational system and it is proved that
education is the key to human progress and social change. If we look back into the history of
India, education was never in the reach of entire people. Unequal access to education has
been rampant in India. Discriminatory order in the caste system has been instrumental in
perpetuating this further. The most deprived were women, scheduled castes & schedule tribes
and children with special needs . Thus, to raise their social status, empowerment is the need
of hour. Empowerment through education is absolutely imperative, as it helps to foster an ‘I
can’ attitude among people. It helps people to understand the varying circumstances of life
and it helps to open the doors to upward mobility. It helps to shape their lives and thus
enhance the inner strength : intellectual, political, social & economic against oppression,
exclusion and discrimination. India, one of the largest countries in the world in terms of
population, has the lowest literacy rate in the world. Such low literacy rate can be one of the
major hindrances in the growth of Indian economy. This emphasizes the need for
empowerment of women, SC & STs and children with special needs which could be
explained as the process of improving the human capital of women, scheduled castes and
scheduled tribes for effective participation in all aspects of development of a nation. This will
make them makers of development and history, not just receivers or objects of it. It is
possible by giving them easy access to literacy or education, information or knowledge
resources, natural or material resources and productive skills will facilitate the
empowerment.
It is a petite effort to provide a platform through this seminar in bringing together
educationist and academicians to highlight the present condition and discuss the future role
of education in the empowerment of women, SC and ST and Children with special needs.
