 The midterm is worth 100 points. There are 10 problems, each worth 10 points. Your
score on the midterm will be converted to a percentage and posted in your assignment
folder with comments.
 This midterm is open book and open notes, and you may take as long as you like on it
provided that you submit the midterm no later than the due date posted in our course
schedule of the syllabus. You may refer to your textbook, notes, and online classroom
materials, but you may not consult anyone.
 You must show all of your work to receive full credit. If a problem does not seem to
require work, write a sentence or two to justify your answer.

containing your work. Scanned work is also acceptable. Be sure to include your name in
the document.
 If you have any questions, please contact me by e-mail ([Link]@[Link]).

At the end of your midterm you must include the following dated statement with your name
typed in lieu of a signature. Without this signed statement you will receive a zero.

I have completed this midterm myself, working independently and not consulting anyone except
the instructor. I have neither given nor received help on this midterm.

Name: Chongo Mumba Date: 02/02/2017

Please remember to show ALL of your work on every problem. If there is no

work to show, then include a sentence or two explaining your answer.

Here are the basic rules of showing work:

a) Each step should show the complete expression or equation rather than a piece of it.
b) Each new step should follow logically from the previous step, following rules of algebra.
c) Each new step should be beneath the previous step.
d) The equal sign, =, should only connect equal numbers or expressions.

1. Evaluate the expression for x = 3 and y = -1.

2 y 2  3x

2(1) - 3 (3)

2–9

= -7

2. Solve the equation for p and check your answer.

2 p 1  3p  4

2p – 1 – 3p = 3p + 4 – 3p

-1p – 1 = 4

-1p – 1 + 1 = 4 + 1

-1p = 5

P = -5

Check the answer

2(-5) – 1 = 3(-5) + 4

-10 – 1 = -15 + 4

-11 = -11

3. Determine which number is larger.

1
3 or 0.34

The first step involves changing the fraction into a decimal number

1
3 = 0.333333 Dividing 1 by 3

Comparing 0.33 and 0.34 will show us the larger number.

The larger number = 0.34

4. Divide and round the answer to the nearest thousandths place.

17  36

= 0.472222222 simplify

= 0.472

5. Solve the equation and round the answer to the nearest thousandths place:

 11.2 x  0.9  3.4 x

-11.2x + 0.9 -3.4x = 3.4x – 3.4x

-14.6x + 0.9 = 0

-14.64x + 0.9 -0.9 = 0 – 0.9

-14.6x = -0.9

X= 0.061643835

X = 0.062 rounded to nearest thousandths place

7. An automobile travels 78 miles on 3 gallons of gasoline. Express the ratio distance traveled to
gas consumption as a fraction reduced to lowest terms.

= 26 miles/gallon

Ratio is 26 miles to one gallon of gasoline

x = 0.35 × 940

x = 329

number = 329

10. A teacher is given a 3% salary increase. If the teacher's current salary is $48,000 per year,
what will be his new annual salary?

x = 3% × $48,000

x = 0.03 × $48000

x = $1440

New annual salary = current salary + increase (x)

New annual salary = 48000 + 1440

New annual salary = $49,440 per year
