Executive summar y
The Beauty Point Foreshore, previously known as Sandy Beach, lies in the North
east of Tasmania, 45 kilometres north of Launceston. Situated on the edge of the
Tamar River estuary, the township of Beauty Point is home to a community of
approximately 1222 people. (2016 Census)

It is the country of the panninher and letteremairrener clans (awaiting TAC

confirmation) and in more recent history served as the first deep water port for
the area servicing the gold mine of the nearby town of Beaconsfield and then
as an apple growing/ exporting area. Today it nestles amongst grazing and wine
growing country with the river and port forming a major part of the activity as
well as being home to the second campus of the Australian Maritime College,
Australia’s National Institute for Maritime Education, Training and Research.

Anecdotally named after a cow called Beauty who died on the point where the
maritime college now sits the area supports a range of river activities such as
sailing, fishing, Seahorse World and Platypus House with the Inspection Head
Wharf accommodating a growing number of cruise ships to the area.

Community consultation revealed that any improvements to the foreshore should

enhance the natural beauty of the place offering greater opportunities to access
the foreshore with new picnic facilities and a new playground high on the agenda.

In developing up the master plan an important aspect to thread through was

the unique character of Beauty Point which, moving forward will be important
to capture through the use of indigenous planting strategies, local artists and
historians working with interpretation to capture the sense of place.

The Beauty Point Foreshore master plan has been developed to provide a future
direction for the foreshore that will bring benefit to the community by providing
better access to the foreshore and connection to the town, upgraded amenities,
enhancing the natural and cultural assets of the area making it attractive to both
locals and visitors.

Stage 2 - Community walk and talk

The community walk and talk attracted approximately 40 people over a wide
range of ages, generating many ideas and highlighting issues with the local BEAUTY POINT FORESHORE
knowledge of the site proving invaluable to the process. The table below provides COMMUNITY WALK & TALK
a summary of the discussion:

Date: Saturday 7th October 2017

• An upgraded foreshore trail Time: 11am
Place: Esplanade Shelter Shed
• Improved access to the water

• An upgraded, innovative playground

• More picnic and BBQ shelters

• More car parking

*
• Interpret the history

Use of thematic interpretation to tell the story of Beauty Point in a subtle yet beautiful way and to combine with wayfinding
and signage as an integrated approach.
To tell the story of the early gold mine, the apple orchards and the activities associated with the river.
Use of local artists, craftspeople, historians and storytellers to weave through a uniquely local perspective.
Draw visitors into the town with stories woven into the markers along the foreshore trail, framing views along the way and
markers where significant historical events have occurred such as the Landing of Flinders.
Maximise the wind flow into moving or sound producing sculpture. Designs to be simple and of robust materials to tolerate the

Furniture to be contemporary in design but with a restrained coastal aesthetic, robust to weather conditions
and vandalism and be integrated with other elements promoting multi-purpose use.
Layout should allow for both one person to sit or a group of people for social interaction. Materials to be a mix
of timber, stone, concrete, stainless or corten steel.
Integrate palette with some feature sculptural pieces. Investigate use of a single colour for highlights in
elements and to work in with the towns identity branding.
