Evolution of Skyscraper Design

The document discusses the history and evolution of skyscrapers. It notes that early skyscrapers had to have thicker walls on lower floors to support the building's weight without steel. The first skyscraper to use steel was the Home Insurance building in Chicago in 1884-1885. In the 1960s, a new method emerged where the core containing elevators and stairways was moved inside buildings, allowing for more floors and greater profitability. Now, nearly all skyscrapers are built with the core in the interior and columns around the exterior. Hong Kong has the most skyscrapers of any city, while Burj Khalifa in Dubai is currently the world's tallest.

Skyscrapper

There are many different skyscrapper definitions, but the mostaccepted one says that the skyscrapper is
every building with ten or more Inhabitable floors, floors defined by the europeanlaw of counting (which
means that the ground floor is a unit for itself). Some older skyscrapper classifications involved lower
buildings with around five or more floors.

The first “high houses” didn’t have steel in their walls so they had to compensate their hight with width
of their walls on the lower floors. That meant that the higher the “high house” was, building of that
house would be less profitable because of less space usage on the lower floors. By using steel and
concrete, the “high houses” stopped being the structures whos walls were carrying all of their
[Link] buldings weight transfers on the collumns that carry the building which are placed on the
floor and the wall is now the element which protects the buliding from bad weather. The first
skyscrapper made out of steel was built in Chicago between 1884-1885 and its name was “Home
insurance building”. Those buildings couldn’t have been higher than 80 floors because then they would
be non-profitable again. By increasing the number of floors there would be a need of more cranes and
every crane would take up more space. Because of that the lower floors would be narrow. The
revolution in building takes place in 1960 when the new revolutionary way of building started. It
involved transfering the main carrying elements to the middle of the building with all of the collumns
and the cranes, which is called the “communication core”. Other collumnswere being moved on the
edge of the building and their main role was keeping the bulding of bending because of the wind. The
first skyscrappersthat were built that way were the two skyscrapperof the worlds trade center in New
York. Today, almost all of the skyscrappers are being built that way. Skyscrappers are sorted by their
purpose and the way of buldingon apartmental and for bussines purposes.

The city of Hong Kong is the place with the most skyscrapppers in the world and the highstskyscrapper
in the world is BuriKhalifa in Dubai.
