Raft Foundation Design Guidelines

The document discusses the design of raft foundations. It notes that when designing the bottom reinforcement of the raft, the value at the face of the column should be taken into account. It also states that it is crucial to check the soil bearing capacity under columns using the conventional Navier stress equation, not the spring reactions from computer output, due to the concentration of forces at column locations. The document appears to provide guidance to students on properly designing and analyzing raft foundations.

Compare the maximum soil pressures with those calculated according to the net
allowable capacity against soil failure and tolerable settlements (net allowable
bearing capacity).

When designing the bottom reinforcement of the raft, the value at the face of the
column shall be taken into account as shown in figure 12 below "section 1-1 and
section 2-2". Accordingly, all moments represented by the moment contours inside
the area of the columns should be disregarded.

Owing to the concentration of forces at the location of columns, it is crucial that

the soil bearing capacity shall be checked using the conventional stress equation of
Navier (equation 2) and not by the spring reactions determined from the computer
output.
