Evolution of Genetic Code

The document provides a timeline of key figures and discoveries in genetics from 460 BCE to 1989. Some of the early pioneers include Hippocrates who developed the theory of "pangenesis" and Gregor Mendel who in the 1860s demonstrated that hereditary traits are transmitted in discrete units through his pea plant experiments. Later discoveries include Walter Sutton observing chromosome behavior during meiosis in 1900, Avery, Macleod and McCarty showing that DNA holds the genetic code in 1944, and Watson and Crick describing the double helix structure of DNA in 1953 which allowed scientists to begin to understand how DNA determines traits.
