Hepatoprotective Effects of Breadfruit Leaf

This study aimed to determine the hepatoprotective effects of ethanol extracts of breadfruit leaf in rats with chemically-induced liver damage. Rats were divided into groups receiving various doses of breadfruit leaf extract orally for 7 days before being given carbon tetrachloride to induce liver damage. Liver damage was measured by levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT). Results showed that breadfruit leaf extract significantly reduced levels of MDA and SGPT compared to the control group, indicating a protective effect on the liver. The 500 mg/kg dose was most effective at reducing SGPT levels. This hepatoprotective effect is likely due

ABSTRACT

Breadfruit leaf (Artocarpus altilis) can be used to cure several diseases such as
renal disease, high blood pressure, liver, diabetes, asthma, toothache, skin
infection, and cancer in Indonesian people. This study aimed to figure out the
hepatoprotective effect ethanol extract of breadfruit leaf in carbon tetrachloride-
induced liver damage in male albino rats of Wistar strain with measuring the
activity of malondialdehyde (MDA) and Serum Glutamic Pyruvic Transaminase
(SGPT). This study used 30 male albino rats of Wistar strain, which were divided
randomly into five groups. Hepatoprotective activity seen by the dose of ethanol
extract of breadfruit leaf with dose (125 mg/kgBW, 250 mg/kgBW, and 500
mg/kgBW) peroral given for 7 days. The 8th day, all groups, excepted the normal
group, were induced by 1 ml/kgBW dose of carbon tetrachloride in intraperitoneal.
Kruskal-Wallis is used in analyzing the data MDA and it continued by Mann-
Whitney, while One-Way ANOVA is used in analyzing the data of SGPT and it is
continued by Bonferroni test. The results of the research showed that all experiment
groups have the lower of MDA and SGPT than the positive control with (p<0,05).
By giving ethanol extract of breadfruit leaf in dose 250 mg/kgBW and 500 mg/kgBW
peroral given for 7 days before induced by 1 ml/kgBW dose of carbon tetrachloride
have the same strength in decreased level of MDA of male albino rats of Wistar
strain, by giving ethanol extract of breadfruit leaf in dose 500 mg/kgBW is the most
effective dose to decreased the level of SGPT. It can be concluded that ethanol
extract of breadfruit leaf had the influence on decreased the levels of MDA and
SGPT. This happened because the breadfruit leaf had high flavonoid compounds
which as a radical-scavenging antioxidant that caught free radical before they
attack lipid membrane.

Keywords: breadfruit leaf, carbon tetrachloride, hepatoprotective, MDA, SGPT.
