E&I Instruments and Inspection Overview

Sensors, transducers, and transmitters are key instruments used in the oil and gas industry to measure physical properties and send signals to control systems. Different types of conduits, cable trays, cables, and enclosures are used depending on indoor or outdoor use and corrosive environments. Impulse tubing connects measurement points in pipes to instruments. The Inspection Test Plan details the testing approach while the Inspection Assignment Package contains forms and documents needed to assign and conduct inspections.

Types of instruments used in Oil & Gas

- Sensors – (measure the physical properties of a solid, fluid or gas. In the oil and gas industry, sensors provide
continuous measurement to detect and monitor gas and gas emissions.)
- Transducer – (converts variations in temperature, pressure, flow or level into an electric signal that is then
picked up by a transmitter.)
- Transmitter – (serves as an interface between sensors and measurement instrumentation such as level sensors,
flow meters, and pressure sensors. This equipment is responsible for sending a digital signal to the main control
system.)

2. Types of Conduits.
- EMT Conduit – Used inside the building.
- PVC Conduit – used inside the wall.
- PVC Coated Conduit – used outdoor in severe corrosive environment.

3. Types of Cable Tray.

- Ladder type cable tray.
- Channel type cable tray.
- Perforated type cable tray.

4. Types of cables.
- Power cable (single core, multi-core)
- Control cable (single core, multi-core)
- Instrument cable ( twisted pair cable, twisted triad cable)
- Armored cable, unarmored cable.
- Shielded cable, unshielded cable.

5. Types of enclosure.
- G.I Steel Enclosure (Square box) for indoor and wall encased.
- Weather proof enclosure –(Nema-3R)
- Powder coated enclosure/ SS 316 enclosure – for outdoor.(IP-54,IP66 Nema-4, Nema-4X)
- Explosion Proof enclosure –for explosive environment ( NEMA -7)
- Terminal Box- Normal Enclosure with terminal blocks for wire/cable termination.

6. What is Impulse tubing?

- Impulse tubing is a small bore pipe that is used to connect a point in a pipe at which a process variable is to be
measured by an instrument. For example, in flow measurement impulse lines are used to connect points
upstream and downstream of the meter.

7. ITP- Inspection Test Plan.

- It is a document that details a systematic approach to testing a system.

8. IAP-Inspection Assignment Package.

- Contents:
o IAP Approval Form.
