My Code of Ethics
Code of ethics to me are important and something to be taken
very seriously. Code of ethics are standards we live by, and in the
case of education something we agree to abide by. The following
code of ethics are standards that I am choosing to live by. Parts of
my code of ethics are coming from the Code of Ethics for Idaho
Professional Educators and will be cited as such.
Professionalism
In the Code of Ethics for Idaho Professional Educators it states the
following: “A professional educator ensures just and equitable treat-
ment for all members of the profession in the exercise of academic
freedom, professional rights and responsibilities while following
generally recognized professional principles (Principle X).”
Being a professional is very important to me. Although I do agree to
the statement above about professionalism, I would like to include
some other ethics under this category for myself.
Professional Dress– Always dressing modestly, and appropriately.
There should be no question if something is appropriate. Profes-
sional dress also includes hairstyles, makeup, and accessories.
Promptness– I believe that professionals have the responsibility to
come to work timely, if anything a professional should be early and
never late. A professional should do everything in their power to be
early and if other circumstances permit they should contact their
supervisor.
Professionals should exhibit professional behavior at all times this
includes having integrity and doing the right thing even when no
one is looking.
Educator/Student Relationship
Having an appropriate educator/ student relationship is
very important to me. In the Code of Ethics for Idaho Profes-
sional Educators states: “A professional educator maintains
a professional relationship with all students, both inside
and outside the physical and virtual classroom (Principle
II).”
For myself I would like to set some more specific ethics
based upon this standard.
Social Media– an educator should not have any sort of so-
cial media relationship with any current student.
Awareness– an educator should always be aware of what is
going on around them. This includes who is with them at
all times even in their classroom. A teacher should never be
alone with a student in a classroom and should make sure
that if it is just them and student that they let another edu-
cator know or move to a public setting to communicate.
Friendliness– educators should not be too friendly with
students. An educator should use their best judgement with
regards to physical touch. An educator should never give a
frontal hug to a student of the opposite sex, and should use
Professional Integrity
As mentioned early it is crucial for an educator to have integri-
ty even when no one is watching. Once more from the Code of
Ethics for Idaho Professional Educators it states: “A professional
educator exemplifies honesty and integrity in the course of
professional practice (Principle IV).”
Below are some personal ethics I have created for integrity.
Misrepresentation– An educator should never misrepresent
information. This includes their own experience and accom-
plishments, their own scores or score of students, or any other
information.
Funding– an educator should never use funding for
any other purpose than the reason they were allotted
that funding.
Reporting– an educator should always report things
they have seen, heard or are concerned with. It is
their duty to report things once they are knowledge
to them.
Honesty– educators should always be honest. This
includes being honest in how they grade students,
with other educators and professionals, and those
they have contact with. If an educator feels or be-
lieves that something might have been misrepre-
sented they should always clarify with those in-
volved and make things right even if they are not at
fault.
