Slab Base Design for ISHB 300 Column

The document summarizes the design of a slab base for a column ISHB 300 subjected to an axial load of 1500 kN. It calculates the required area of the plate to be 1.66 x 103 mm2. It then designs a rectangular plate with dimensions of 450 mm x 400 mm, which exceeds the required area. The thickness of the plate is calculated to be 18.96 mm and a 20 mm thick plate is selected. Anchor bolts and connection of the column via cleat angles are also specified.

1. Design a slab base for a column ISHB 300 @ 58.

kN. Use M20 Concrete for the pedestal

Sol.

Bearing strength of concrete = 0.45 f ck = 0.45 x 20 = 9 N/mm2

Let us assume a plate as below.

a
a

For a=b we have,

Area = (300+2a)(250+2a) = 0.167x106.

That is 4a2 + 1100a-166925x103 = 0.

On solving a = 67 mm.

Therefore L = 300+2a = 300 + 2(67) = 434 mm = 450 mm say.

And B = 250 + 2a = 400 mm say.

Therefore the total area of the plate = 450x400.>1.66 x 103mm2

We have,

450 − 300
a= = 75mm

From Steel Table t f for ISHB300 @58.8kg/m is 10.66 mm

Provide a 20 mm thick plate.

• Connect the base plate to foundation using 4 nos. 20 mm dia 300 mm long anchor bolts.
• Column is connected to the base plate, using 2ISA 80x80x6 mm cleat angles with 20 mm
bolts.
