Tornadoes
The winds of a tornado are the most violent that occur on Earth, reaching speeds of up to 480 kilometres
per hour. Each year, most frequently in spring and summer, hundreds of tornadoes cause millions of
pounds’ worth of damage and sometimes lives are lost.
What are the signs of an oncoming tornado? The sky turns a shade of green or black and there can be a
fall of heavy hail. Stones the size of a grapefruit have been reported! A large dark area of low-lying
clouds appears and there is also the distinctive noise of the tornado, which has been compared with the
roar of a jet plane. Objects such as leaves or small branches swirl through the air as they are pulled
upwards into the funnel of the tornado.
Obviously, if you live in tornado-prone areas, it is essential to be prepared. You could be anywhere – at
home, at school or somewhere outside and it is vital you know how to react in each situation. Collapsing
buildings have claimed many lives; the other main hazard is that of being hit by flying objects. Airborne
debris can even include cars and lorries!
If you are in your house or other small building, go to the cellar or a room without windows. The force of
a tornado can blow a window in with possibly fatal results to anyone nearby. Get under a large heavy
table or upturned sofa. If at school, in a shopping centre or somewhere similar, make your way to the
lowest level of the building. Go to a central point, if possible, putting as many walls as you can between
yourself and the tornado. Staying under a doorway also offers some protection from falling objects.
Anyone outside should find an open area, lie down flat and cover their head with their hands.
