Chapter-5
Drainage & Irrigation pattern
The district is highly dissected by rivers of varying magnitude. The major water
divide in the district runs north to south direction through the Ratu and Lodhma.
The area in the eastern part of the water divide is drained by Subarnrekha and the
western part of the divide is drained by South Koel and Karo. The important river
basins are the South Koel, the Damodar and the Karkari. The Kanchi and Raru are
the tributaries of river Subarnrekha. The South Koel originates from Piska near
Ranchi. The Karkari river drains the southeastern part of the district.

Farming is most relevant & important practices in our country, so do in the district. As the
district is having an undulating surface feature irrigation is depended on rivers and their
tributaries. But sometimes it is very difficult in years where there is very long summers and

10
little rainfall. It is really a challenge to utilize those water resources. Now a days check dams
are constructed on rivers/streams, storing rain water in small ponds , using well water
through pumps, canals are also being constructed to carry water from source to cropland.

Chapter-7
Surface water and Ground water scenario in the district
The district is having varied hydrogeological characteristics due to which ground
water potential differs from one region to another. It is underlain by Chotanagpur
granite gneiss of pre-Cambrian age in three-fourth of the district. In Ratu and Bero
blocks thick lateritic capping is placed above granite gneiss. A big patch of older
alluvium is found in Mandar block extending from Brombay and murma areas. Khelari
(northernmost portion) area consists of Limestone rocks.

14
Aquifer systems---
Two types of aquifers are found. Weathered aquifer and fractured aquifers. Thickness
of weathered aquifers varies from 10-25 m in granite terrain and 30-60m in lateritic
terrain. In weathered aquifer ground water occurs in unconfined condition while in
fractured aquifer ground water occurs in semi confined to confined condition .

Aquifer geometry----
The aquifer geometry for shallow and deeper aquifer has been established through
hydro geological studies, exploration and the surface and sub-surface geophysical
studies in the district.

Shallow aquifer—
The shallow aquifers are being tapped through dug wells, dug cum borewells and hand
pumps. The thickness of weathered mantle varies from 5 to 20 [Link]. In lateritic terrain
many dug wells dry up during summer months. Hand pumps generally tap first fracture
zones and its depth is 30-40 [Link].

Deeper aquifer—
In granite gneiss terrain area first fracture occurs between 50-70 m an second fracture is
found between 100-120 m depth. Discharge of borewells varies between 10 to 30 m3/hr
in these areas. Drawdown varies between 13 to 20 m. In lateritic terrain of Nagri first
fracture zone is found between 60 to 75 [Link] and second fracture zone is between 90
to100 [Link]. Third set of fracture can be found between [Link] depth. Discharge
may vary between 15 to 25 m3/hr. Drawdown may vary between 20-25 m.

Exploratory wells - In Ranchi district 81 no. of exploratory wells, 21 no. of observation

wells and 23 no. of piezometers were constructed upto 31st March 2013. Exploratory
drilling was done upto 200 metre depth. Thickness of weathered zone varies between 5m
at Silli to 29.75m at Palandu.

Well design—In lateritic terrain two types of wells can be constructed. One is
having slotted pipes and casing where aquifers can be tapped and other having

15
borewells. Tube wells having 40 to 60m depth can be constructed having 15 to 20m
slotted pipe and 25 to 40 m casing depending on alluvial thickness. Borewells having
150 to 200m depth having 40 to 60 m casing pipe (8’’) and naked borehole of 110 m
to 140 m depth.(6’’). In Granite Gneiss terrain bore well of 150 m (6’’ to 8’’) depth
can be constructed depending on presence of fractures in the area.

Depth to Water levels-

During pre-monsoon season- dug wells were inventoried to know

about water level scenario. Depth to water level varies between 6.11 [Link]. (Dorma)
to 10.94 [Link] in Bero locality. In the lateritic terrain of Ratu, Nagri, Mandar areas
water level even goes upto 11 to 12 [Link]. During summer seasons Dug wells
become unsustainable for drinking and irrigation purposes. During peak summer
season’s deeper water levels may be observed in dug wells. Four zones can be
deciphered from the pre-monsoon water level data analysis. Tamar, lapung and
Bero areas have water level more than 10 [Link]., Parts of Bundu, sonahatu, Itki,
mandar, Chanho, Burmu and Khelari areas where water level varies between 8-
[Link]. Nagri, Ratu, Kanke and ormanjhi areas where water level varies between 6-
8 [Link]. Major parts of Namkum, Silli block, Rahe block and parts of angara and
Kanke varies between 4-6 mbgl.

During post-monsoon season--- Dug wells were monitored during

November 2012 to know the post-monsoon depth to water levels in the district.
Three zones can be deciphered. Water level varies between 6-8 [Link] in parts of
Tamar, Lapung and Bero blocks. Water level varies between 4-6 mbgl in Parts of
Sonahatu, Silli, Angara, Itki, Mandar, Chanho, Burmu and Khelari blocks and in
Namkom, Bundu, Rahe, Nagri, Ratu, Kanke, Ormanjhi blocks and Parts of Mandar,
Angara block water level varies between [Link]

Quality of ground water is just as important as its quantity. This is well recognized part
and accepted fact in present day world. Quality of ground water in nature mostly
depends on the geological formations holding it i.e. Aquifers. All ground water contains
salts in solution that are derived from the locations, and rocks through which it moves.
In addition ground water contamination is caused by discharge containing pollutants,
which get mixed with them. Quality of ground water is described with reference to the
needs i.e., drinking, industrial and irrigation to assess the quality of ground water for
different purposes. The physical and chemical constituents are determined and are
compared with the standard ones, recommended each for the drinking, industrial and
irrigations requirements.

CHEMICAL QUALITY—
Ground water quality in general is potable and found as per specification of Bureau
of Indian standards

21
GENERAL RANGE OF CHEMICAL PARAMETER OF RANCHI DISTRICT

1) Electrical conductivity: of ground water of parts of Ranchi District ranges between 60

to 600 micro Siemens / cm. at 250 C.
2) PH: Ground water of the parts of Ranchi Districts is slightly alkaline in nature where PH
varies between 7.21 to 7.95.
3) Chloride: concentration of chloride varies between 18 to 106 mg/l.
4) Nitrate: It is present within permissible limit of BIS. Concentration varies between 7.4
to 56mg/l.
5) Sulphate: Its concentration in ground water varies between 2.4 to 19 mg/l.
6) Bicarbonate: concentration of bicarbonate is between 43 to 171 mg/l.
7) Calcium: Calcium is found between 14 to 64mg/l.

8) Magnesium: It occurs between 6 to 95mg/l.

9) Sodium and Potassium: concentration of sodium is between 4 to 55 mg/l while
potassium occurs between 0.3 to 1.95mg/l.

Ground water related issues –

Deeper aquifers of Ranchi Urban area is showing declining trend of water levels. Rain water
harvesting should be adopted in those areas where Post Monsoon Water level is more than
7 m bgl. And long term water level trend is declining at the rate of more than 0.1 mbgl.
Area notified by CGWA/SGWA
From the ground water point of view, all the blocks of the district are under safe category. So
far no blocks have been notified by C.G.

Chapter- 14
Total mineral Reserve available in the District
Geological Observation of the Field:
Topographically, the area represents small hillock of Granite/Gneiss trending is North - South
ranging from 720mRL to 665mRL above from MSL. The highest elevation of RL 720m above
MSL was observed in the top of the hill, whereas the lowest elevation encountered is of RL
665m above MSL, which was observed in the base part of the hill. The Granite/Gneiss
boulders exposed throughout the area on the upper part of the hillocks. The general slope of
the area is on the North-South side. The area is totally free from Forest Land of any
designation as well as forest growth and vegetation.

Method of estimation:
The economic axis, feasibility axis and geological axis have been categorized and based on this
UNFC codification the reserve and a resource was estimated. Cross-sectional method has
been adapted for calculation of resource and reserve. A cross-sectional area has been
calculated which multiplied by the length of influence. The recovery factor has been
considered. The volume so estimated is then converted into tonnes.
As per the rules and regulation, it is found that in lease area some part of the mineral will be
blocked due to 7.5m safety barrier and its pit slope which is not possible to mine out. Mineral
reserve is that part of reserve which can be calculated based on taking ultimate pit slope of
the working leaving 7.5m safety zone from the boundary.
The proved depth has been taken based on the actual thickness of the mineral body exposed
in the area on the upper part of the hill up to surface level. Based on the exposed Stone body
seen in the area, the thickness of this probable zone is considered further 5m below the
proved zone.

Chapter-16
Use of mineral
Minerals excavated from the mines can be used for many civil as well as local constructions.
Stones of variable sizes can be used differently for different construction jobs and road
projects. Boulder of different size rocks can be used on the bank of the rivers to prevent
erosion, dam construction, embankment works, etc.

After crushing into different sizes these powder can be used with sand for various construction.
Bricks can also be made out of stones which are used to make houses or being used to form
walls of wells.

Variety of mineral deposits and their uses:-

Quartz/silica: Refractory, Ceramic, Foundry, Iron and Steel, Abrasive, Paints and Cement
Industries

Fire clay: As Refractory Bricks, Ceramics and Potteries.

Barites: It is the primary ore of Barium. It is most commonly used as a weighting agent in
drilling muds. It is also used as a pigment in paints, paper and cloth industries. Barite's high
density makes it opaque to x-rays. This property is used to get the image of internal organs by
x-ray.

140
Chapter-17
Demand and supply of the mineral
The demand for construction materials, is rising according to the leading players in
the reality space. There is a growing need for building materials both in new & old
construction. The Granite building stone is important building material. Hence a lot of
building stone is required. The mining projects can fulfill its end uses in construction
purposes.
There is a huge demand of Granite building stone for state and National Road projects, the
projects are under massive development for its widening and strengthening operation apart
from this many bridges and flyovers are also being under construction.
Building stones is widely used in construction activities as main raw material. It is available in
almost all parts of the district.
The entry in the target market is easy and there is a notable gap in the demand and supply
which is growing. However, the demand for the stone is continuously increasing due to rising
trend infrastructure projects.

Details of Eco- Sensitive area, if any,
According to the 30th meeting of Expert Committee meeting held during 25th- 26th June
2018 in ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate change, for the Declaration of Eco-
Sensitive Zone (ESZ) around the Wildlife Sanctuaries/ National parks, no area is marked
under the Eco- Sensitive Zone in Ranchi district.

144
Chapter-21
Impact on environment (air, water, noise, soil, flora,& fauna,
land use, agriculture, forest, etc.)
Mining activities directly harm the surrounding environment. There is a direct effect on air
water noise soil flora & fauna, etc.
Air- quality of air is affected by dust particles in quarries. Huge amount of dust is produce
after blasting and crushers running in the quarry. Although blasting is an important process so
pollution in the air will be remarkable. There are innumerable stone crushers in the district.
Hence, pollution in the air must be very much available including noxious fumes of vehicles. It
appears that air pollution level will be significant.

Water- weather the the mine is near or far from water source, precautions should be taken to
minimize the disturbance caused by mining activities. Siltation, sedimentation, unnaturally
high concentration of some chemicals over a significant area can be observed. Runoff of mere
soil or rock debris although non-toxic also devastates the surrounding. Acid mine drainage is
considered as one of the most serious threats to water resources. A mine with acid mine
drainage has the potential for long term devasting impacts on rivers, streams and aquatic life.

Noise- noise pollution takes place due to dust generation from crusher, transport operation,
waste dumping and drilling/ blasting. The main source of noise pollution in the mining area is
the operation of Heavy Earth moving machineries like Dumpers, Excavators.

Soil- in the lease area during quarry development top soil which is rich in nutrients is
removed. Getting in contact with stone dust or any other external chemical like diesel or
other oil spills contaminates the quality of the soil.

145
Flora & fauna- due to mining activities local flora and animals go through several
disturbances. Habitat destruction is one of the main issues of mining activities. Huge area of
natural habitats are destroyed during mine construction and exploitation forcing animals to
leave the site. Starting a mine requires a huge number of trees cutting.
Land use, forest, agriculture- Quality and quantity of overburden contamination takes place.
Forests gets destroyed due to mining activities. If quarry is not backfilled after mining severe
accidents can take place. Mine dust from the quarry get mixed with the top soil resulting
reduction of fertility of agricultural lands.

146
Chapter-22
Remedial measures to mitigate the impact of mining on the
environment
Remedial actions should be taken to mitigate the impact of mining, although it is not 100%
possible to reverse the after effects of mining. following are some suggestive measures to
overcome the situation.

If possible wet drilling should preferred

Water spraying shall be there on roads, crusher and mining area.

The safety barrier shall be used for plantation all around the mine area.

Proper and timely maintenance of machines shall be done.

Monitoring of air quality should be done and in case it exceeds the permissible limit adequate
measures like covering the crusher shall be done.

Garland drains, gabions are to be constructed so that during rainy season, dumpling materials
due to erosion may be catched in the garland drain.

Avenue plantation in and around the mine area, dump site and crusher shall be done.

147
Chapter-23
Reclamation of mined out area

Mining is a temporarily activity, with the operating life of a mine lasting from few years to ten
years (Minor Minerals). Mine closure occurs once the mineral resource at a working mine is
exhausted or operation are no longer profitable.

Mine closure plan are required by the concerned department before mining permit is granted
(proposal given in mining Plan). Depending on the site, the mine may be restored to its pre-
Mining conditions. This helps to provide protection and mitigate the adverse environmental
impacts. Reclamation typically involves a number of activities such as removing any
hazardous material, reshaping the land, restoring top soil and Planting native trees.

148
Chapter-24
Risk assessment & Disaster management plan

Mining- The entire area is highly potential. As the deposits are massive in nature, it is
proposed to carry out only opencast mining. In opencast mining is a type of strip mining in
which the deposit is removed from the surface. In many cases removal of trees and burning
of vegetation is practiced. Usage of heavy machineries cause destruction of natural
vegetation and soil quality.

Blasting –Blasting is an important method in mining of deposit. In this shallow holes are
practiced, holes are done in hard formation by jack – hammers, using explosives. Spacing and
overburden should be maintained between them. If any thing is neglected things can go
wrong and can be severe.

Explosives-Blasting is carried out by exploding power gel & safety fuse. It is important to use,
store & disposal of the explosive to avoid major accidents.
During shot firing precautions should be made to avoid kinking during fire. Drilling and
charging of holes could not be carried out in the same area and in the same time.
Regular announcement to be made before and after blasting along with using warning signals
and red flags
Blasting time should be fixed and strictly followed.
Before firing any shot all persons and domestic animals should be withdrawn from the area.
Blasting shelters to be provided.

149
Chapter-25
Details of Occupational Health in the District

The mining industry has a reputation for being a risky business, with health risks that are
varied and often quite serious, and it is important for miners to protect themselves
accordingly.

Nevertheless, mining doesn’t have to be unsafe. With the introduction of strict safety
legislation and protocol, as well as advances in safety equipment, the industry has seen its
fatality rate drop over time. Although the goal of zero harm has not yet been achieved, it
remains the standard that mining companies continue to strive towards.

“Understanding and being aware of your environment is the first step to preventing illness or
injury in the workplace,” reveals mining medicine researchers.

Dust inhalation is one of the most common concerns for miners. Mines are noisy places, with
the constant of drilling and heavy machinery, and the potential for hearing damage is quite
serious. Many people don’t notice the damage to their hearing until long after they were first
exposed to the noisy environment, as most damage occurs very slowly. sleep disturbances,
concentration problems and even permanent hearing loss, musculoskeletal disorders,
reproductive damage in females, vision impairment, digestive problems and cardiovascular
changes are few examples.
Silicosis is a progressive interstitial lung disease, characterized by shortness of breath, cough,
fever and bluish skin; it can present in three different forms: acute, accelerated and chronic.1
It is caused by the lung tissue reaction to the inhalation of silica and occurs most commonly
as an occupational disease of people working in the quarrying, manufacturing and building
construction industries. Exposure to large amounts of free silica can go unnoticed because
silica is odourless, non-irritant and does not cause any immediate health effects. As silicosis is
incurable, clinical management includes removing the worker from the industry and giving
symptomatic treatment.

Among the clinical complications of silicosis is tuberculosis (called silicotuberculosis), which is

a major public health concern. Chronic exposure to silica increases workers’ risk of
tuberculosis infection and aggravates pre-existing pulmonary tuberculosis. Differential
diagnosis is a challenge. Although treatable, tuberculosis in silicosis patients may go
undiagnosed because cough, wheeze, expectoration, dyspnoea and vague chest pains are
symptoms common to both diseases. Interpretation of the chest X-ray film of patients with

150
silicosis is difficult due to the superimposition of silicotic nodules and tuberculous
infiltrations. Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacilli may not be recovered from the sputum
coal dust inhalation is unavoidable for coal miners. “The ongoing inhalation of coal dust can
cause what is colloquially known as ‘miner’s lung’ or ‘black lung’. Miner’s lung is a form of the
occupational lung disease group pneumoconiosis. It varies in severity, but symptoms include
shortness of breath and scarring of lung tissue, which can cause ongoing respiratory issues.

Even though measures to prevent black lung have been legally enforced for many years now,
new cases still occur among coal miners. Mining companies need to develop a dust control
plan, and supervisors should ensure that dust control systems are working properly for every
production shift. Mine workers should be trained on the hazards of over-exposure to coal
mine dust. Respiratory protection should be used when dust control protection is being
installed, maintained or repaired. Medical screening and surveillance is also essential.

151
Chapter-26
Plantation and Green belt Development

With rapid industrialization and consequent deleterious impact of pollutants on environment,

role of environmental protection offered by trees cannot be neglected. Trees are very
suitable for detecting, recognizing and monitoring air pollution effects. Monitoring of
biological effects of air pollutant by the use of plants as indicator has been applied on local,
regional and national scale. Trees functions as sinks for air pollutant, besides their bio-
esthetical values, owing to their presence in large numbers. Annual need of oxygen for one
person is met by150 m2 of leaf surfaces i. e, 30-40 m2 of greenery. So, it is necessary to
develop green belt in and around the polluted site with suitable species to combat the air
pollution effectively.
The green belt development not only functions as a foreground and background landscape
feature resulting in harmonizing and amalgamating the physical structures of the mines with
surrounding environment, but also acts as a pollution sink as indicated above. Thus,
implementation of afforestation program is of paramount importance.
The choice of species will be done according to the plants groeing suitable to the
environmental conditions prevailing in the area. The plantation should be done in the safety
zone area.
The phase wise reclamation & afforestation has to be started simultaneously in the
production year.
The 7.5m safety barrier shall be used for green belt development at 2m spacing left all around
and shall be used for plantation.

152
Chapter-27
Soils

The soils of the district are mostly of the residual type. High temperature and
high rainfall have led to the formation of lateritic type of soils from rocks of Archean
metamorphic complex exposed in the greater part of the district. Texturally the soils of
the district have been classified into four classes-

1. Stony and gravelly soils--- These are low grade soils having a large admixture of
cobbles, pebbles and gravels generally found at the base of the hills.

2. Red and yellow soils: - This soil is formed by the decomposition of crystalline
metamorphic rocks like granite- gneiss etc. These rocks contain mineral particles like
biotite, hornblende and iron. Higher areas have soils with light red color but the lower
areas have relatively dark color. It lacks nitrogen, Phosphorus acid and humus. Potash
and lime are sufficiently found.

3. Lateritic soils: - This type of soil is found in Ratu, Bero and parts of Mandar
Blocks. The soil has dark red or brown colour, It has high iron content and has been
formed by the process of lateritisation of the weathered material in the favourable
climate and topography.

4. Alluvial soils: - River channels in the district are covered with alluvial soils consisting
mainly of coarse sand and gravel mixed with silt and clay. Soil thickness depends upon the
topographical control.

These soils are used in the manufacturing of bricks

28. Conclusion
Due to time constraint it was not possible to visit all resource area
The detailed geological investigation for different mineral has not been done in the
whole area of the district. Even though, within stipulated time, the data/ information/
report available in the different department are incorporated in this report. The
resource area particularly for stone chips/ ornamental stone/ dimensional or decorative
stone has been demarcated only on the basis of geology.
All the parameters and the statutory clearances required for mining should be verified
by field investigation and consulting with concerned authorities before opting for E.C.
Out of the demarcated areas, only few can fulfil all the statutory criteria.
This is an interim report, prepared on the basis of initial data available with different
departments.
For selection of the area for auction block, all statutory requirements should be
considered and clearances from C.O., D.F.O., Gram Sabha and other concerned
authorities is required.
For other areas, the norms of the different department and statutory clearances will
remain same as per the guidelines of SEIAA, DEIAA and MoEF & CC.
