PURPOSE OF THE CONSTRUCTION
The project is meant to achieve the following purposes
1. To design and construct a maize shelling machine that operates with a high
degree of efficiency
2. To design and construct a maize sheller that would not have much breaking
effect on grains, thereby leaving the cobs intact during the process
3. To design a machine that has a high production volume with minimal
interference from the farmer.
4. To design and fabricate a machine that reduces human effort and eases the
stress on the operator
5. To design and construct a machine that is economic and has little or no
complication in maintenance
6. To determine energy requirement for operating the machine efficiently
PROBLEM STATEMENT
Removing the grain from the cob has always being a strenuous task
for the rural farmers who practice subsistence farming. The traditional
method of shelling does not support large-scale shelling of maize and the
existing motorized shellers causes great damages to the grains beside
breaking the cob to piece, they are also very expensive to buy/lease, with
regards to this limitations, a maize shelling machine is designed which
operates to remove the maize grains from the cobs at a high production
volume and efficiency.
Justification
1. Industrial maize shellers are too expensive for rural farmers to
purchase
2. For most of the farmers, the cost of hiring the services of
industrial shellers is high with respect to the amount of grain
output at the end of the farming season.
3. Rotary and pedal-powered maize shellers require much energy
inputs which limits their adoption by most of the farmers since
they are too cumbersome to use and result to a great deal of
fatigue.
