Free vs. Forced Convection Explained

Fourier's law of heat conduction states that the rate of heat transfer through a material is proportional to the temperature gradient in the material. Convection heat transfer involves the transfer of heat from one place to another by the circulation of fluids like gases and liquids. Free convection occurs due to changes in density as the temperature changes, while forced convection uses external means like fans or pumps to induce fluid motion. Conducting materials allow heat to transfer through them easily, while insulating materials inhibit heat transfer. Lumped heat capacity analysis treats an object as a single unit at a uniform temperature when one of its dimensions is small compared to the others.

3.A steel pipe with 5 cm outer dia. Is covered with a 7mm asbestos insulation (k=0.43 W/m-k)
followed by a 2.5 cm layer of fiberglass insulation(k=0.08 W/m-k). The pipe wall temperature is
315 0C and the outside insulation temperature is 380C. Calculate the interface temperature
between the asbestos and fiberglass.

4. A hot fluid is being conveyed through a long pipe of 4cm outer diameter and covered with
2cm tick insulation. It is proposed to reduce the conduction heat loss to the surroundings to
one-third of the present rate by further covering wit same insulation. Calculate the additional
thickness of insulation.
