ARDUINO BASED WATER LEVEL SENSOR WITH NOTIFICATION
Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM AND REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES
Water level sensors are big help on creating awareness of the current status of
liquids whether it is inside of the container or outside in the environment. It uses different
kinds of sensors to gather data which will be processed by a computer and converts it to
human readable display. Water Level Sensors are used to detect the level of substances
that can flow. Such substances include liquids, slurries, granular material and powders.
(www. [Link]).
According to [Link], ultrasonic sensors are the most common non-contact
sensors for sewer water level measurement. It measures the time-of-flight ultrasonic
pulses reflected from a surface or water surface. Another type of non-contact is Radar
sensor. It also measures the time-of-flight of pulses but instead of ultrasonic, it uses radio
frequency. Radar uses more power than ultrasonic, and due to it, radars are more
expensive than ultrasonic. Every sensor needs a processor that is powered up of some
kind of sources. And usually, they are very complicated and requires special hardware to
program the controller. As stated by Yusuf (2014), Arduino made all this easy by making
it simple through programing, erasing, and reprograming in a very convenient time. This
means Arduino can be programmed easily to operate the Ultrasonic sensor.
This study aims to build a water level sensor which is simple, reliable, easy to use,
and easy to install that could notify not only by alarm, but also through SMS, which is
one of the most widely used data application.
According to Dr. Stuart Styles of Irrigation Training Research Center (ITTRC)
(2003), ultrasonic transmit coned shaped sound waves through the air. These pulses are
DON HONORIO VENTURA TECHNOLOGICAL STATE UNIVERSITY
2
ARDUINO BASED WATER LEVEL SENSOR WITH NOTIFICATION
reflected by the liquid and received by the sensor. The time interval is converted to a
distance by an electronic device or microcontroller. No parts of the sensor ever touched
the liquid, a distinct advantage of this sensor type. It means that the sensor is not affected
by dirty water, floating debris, or aquatic wildlife. Another advantage of Ultrasonic
sensor is that it is not affected by high flow rates making it appropriate for rivers and
lakes. Other advantages are low maintenance, can withstand freezing temperature, and
long term reliability.
Agreeing to Tarulescu (2013), ultrasonic sensors are useful under poor lightning
conditions or when there are many transparent objects such as windows, glass as where
infrared or vision-based sensor based fail. He used Arduino microcontroller to trigger
pulses to the sensor in his experiment. He also stated that the sonar ultrasonic sensor is
used in different types of applications due to low cost and high precision compared with
other distance sensors.
Tarulescu (2013), in different study, conducted measurement experiments with the
ultrasonic sensor with different presets distance by using plane obstacles with different
widths, and obstacles with triangular and circular cross-sections. The obstacles was
placed at 20 to 200 mm over the ultrasonic sensor, and the measurements was made at
714,5 mmHg atmospheric pressure and 24 oC (297 K) temperature.
According to the test shown in the article of Ausilio (2011), the Arduino UNO is
an accurate platform for a series of lab settings. However, the accuracy could depend on
the programing style, but the Arduino proved that it is robust enough to be accurate even
with poor programing. Their test showed an impressive accuracy, 1,000 trials led to the
same exact value. Their test results indicate a fairly high degree reliability. The test
DON HONORIO VENTURA TECHNOLOGICAL STATE UNIVERSITY

ARDUINO BASED WATER LEVEL SENSOR WITH NOTIFICATION
showed that Arduino boards can be quite accurate in 1/0 tasks. In conclusion, the critical
advantage of the Arduino is mostly related to the large open-source community that has
flourished.
Rapid advances in electronic technologies have made a variety of inexpensive
sensing, monitoring, and control capabilities available. An open-source project call
Arduino where resulted in the creation of programmable microcontroller development
platform. As an open-source device, anyone could modify and program it by using simple
hardware and software. It lessen the expenses for programing microcontroller with high
reliability and expansion capability through add-on circuit boards (Fisher and Sui, 2013).
As stated by Geers (2001) mentioned by Peijiang and Xuehua, GSM (Global
System for Mobile communication) is a digital communication network which develops
rapidly in recent years. Short Message Service of GSM is the valued-added service based
on data packet switching provided by mobile communication company using GSM
networks.
The coverage of the network is improved and the expensive network building and
maintenance cost can be saved for users because the GSM network can be interconnected
and roamed all over the country, it has strong network ability, the users has no need to
organize another network (McKinion, 2004).
According to Huang et. al. (2010), GSM networks have advantages of mature
technology, wide covering area, long communication distance, and sound communication
effect and so on. The remote home security system they presented combines so many
advantages of WSN and GSM. Firstly, this system can send alarm short message to the

users through GSM networks immediately, informing people the possible dangerous
circumstances in home wherever the users are.
Su (2000) studied to design a new water level for irrigation water measurement to
reduce the investment of water measuring equipment required for agriculture
management. It is based on Ultrasonic pules-echo technology, includes ultrasonic
transmission circuit, echo receiver circuit, data output circuit and micro control unit
(MCU) with specially designed transformer and a drive circuit based on the quality for
accepting circuit.

Significance of the Study
Barangay Officials. This study will be beneficial to the Barangay officials to
make things easier in monitoring water level to know when to conduct emergency
procedures and secure the safety of the community
Community and students. This study will benefit the community as well as the
students becoming prepared during calamities such as floods; it is the fact that being
ready and aware can save one’s life. This device is a protective measure for people and
property against this adverse effect of this kind of calamity.
Future researchers. For the future researchers, the device could be further
evaluated in terms of reliability and consistency of the alarm in the future.
Scope and Delimitations
This device is capable in measuring the water level of flood, water in dams, home
use of water leveling, and sending messages using Short Message Service(SMS) to
cellular phones whose number are inputted to device, The message contains the data of
water level which monitored by the system. It is capable of sensing the level using
ultrasonic sensor where place at the top and measures the water level. The system also
has alarming buzzer which is triggered when the water level is on the critical level. The
system also has a warning LED lights. There are 4 colors of light for different level
(Green for safe, Yellow for prepare, Orange for danger, and Red for critical)
This product is used only for floods and water dam purposes. It is used to measure
the level of the flood or water dam. It can measure a several meters but this is

ARDUINO BASED WATER LEVEL SENSOR WITH NOTIFICATION
programmed depending on the water level and depends where it is placed. When the
water level reached the critical level will trigger the alarm, this is the signal that you will
evacuate immediately. In water dams, if the alarm triggered the dam will release the
water all the way through the river. This is powered via 9 volt battery, USB power source,
or external power source. The product tends to use a solar panel but there are problems
when it comes to financial. The system also relies to GSM network for the information of
the water level. It submits a SMS message to the phone numbers for the information of
the water level. There will be a limitation if the message was not given because of
network error or blocked. This is not design for alternate transmission for SMS.
Definition of Terms
Drive Circuits. A semiconductor fab is a manufacturing plant in which raw
silicon wafers are turned into integrated circuits, ([Link]). In this study,
drive circuits are used to intact electrical components to make them solid.
GSM. Global System for Mobile communication is a digital mobile telephony
system that is widely used in Europe and other parts of the world. GSM uses a variation
of time division multiple access (TDMA) and is the most widely used of the three
digital wireless telephony technologies (TDMA, GSM, and CDMA). GSM digitizes and
compresses data, then sends it down a channel with two other streams of user data, each
in its own time slot. It operates at either the 900 MHz or 1800 MHz frequency band,
([Link]). Operationally, GSM is to be used as a module 8
which sends SMS to a single or multiple mobile numbers.
LED. (Light-emitting Diode) sometimes called light-emitting
polymer or polyLED - is a technology based on the use of polymer as

the semiconductor material in LEDs. Polymers are chemical substances that consist of
large molecules that are, themselves, made from many smaller and simpler molecules:
proteins and DNA are examples of naturally occurring polymers; many others, such as
nylon, are artificially created. Because of their flexibility and strength, polymers are used
for products such as car bumpers and bullet-proof vests, ([Link]). In this
study, LEDs are used as an indicator of the product.
Microcontroller. It is a compact integrated circuit designed to govern a specific
operation in an embedded system, ([Link]). Conceptually, microcontroller
is used to drive the ultrasonic and GSM module according to the transmitted program.
Power Supply. It is an electronic device which converts one electrical input to
another electrical output that is suitable for another electronic device. It Also knows as
power brick or power adapter , ([Link]). In this study, transformer is
used as a power source of the GSM module.
Radar. Radar is an acronym for "radio detection and ranging." A radar system
usually operates in the ultra-high-frequency (UHF) or microwave part of the radio-
frequency (RF) spectrum, and is used to detect the position and/or movement of objects.
Radar can track storm systems, because precipitation reflects electromagnetic fields at
certain frequencies. Radar can also render precise maps. Radar systems are widely used
in air-traffic control, aircraft navigation, and marine navigation,
([Link]). In this study, Radar is used as an another 9
example of water level sensor.
Sensor. Sensor is a device that detects and responds to some type of input from
the physical environment. The specific input could be light, heat, motion, moisture,
DON HONORIO VENTURA TECHNOLOGICAL STATE UNIVERSITY
ARDUINO BASED WATER LEVEL SENSOR WITH NOTIFICATION
pressure, or any one of a great number of other environmental phenomena. The output is
generally a signal that is converted to human-readable display at the sensor location or
transmitted electronically over a network for reading or further processing,
([Link]). In this study, sensor is used to input a distance of the device to a
certain object.
SMS. SMS stands for Short Message Service and is also commonly referred to as
a "text message". With a SMS, you can send a message of up to 160 characters to another
device. Longer messages will automatically be split up into several parts. Most cell
phones support this type of text messaging, ([Link]). In
this study, SMS is used as the type of message to be sent in a certain receiver based on
the given number in the GSM module.
Ultrasonic. Ultrasonic vibrations of frequencies greater than the upper limit of the
audible range for humans—that is, greater than about 20 kilohertz. The term sonic is
applied to ultrasound waves of very high amplitudes. Hypersound, sometimes called
praetersound or microsound, is sound waves of frequencies greater than 1012 hertz. In
such high frequencies, it is very difficult for a sound wave to propagate efficiently;
indeed, above a frequency of about 1.25 × 1013 hertz. It is impossible for longitudinal
waves to propagate at all, even in a liquid or a solid, because the molecules of the
material in which the waves are traveling cannot pass the vibration along rapidly enough,
([Link]). In this study, ultrasonic is used as a device for measuring water
level.

and sight, also by means of SMS to notify someone that will monitor, guide, and save the
community.
Recommendation:
The following are the recommendations for the further researchers to improve the
product:
1. Power source: make the product independent to a power source that even if
without it, the sensor will still work fine.
2. Casing: the casing must be water resistant to protect the vital parts from being
flooded which will cause a short circuit.
3. Sensor: the sensors are the crucial parts of the product, as much as possible,
more sensors must be used to enlarge the margin of failure.
4. Microcontroller: to improve the speed is to improve the processor which is the
microcontroller and further researchers can use the latest model of Arduino for faster,
flexible microcontroller.
5. LCD screen: computer/laptop is not needed for actual numeric measurement of
30
the sensors if this part is added.
