Week 2
Five Command Words
1. State implies a concise answer with little or no supporting argument
e.g :
Question :
State one factor on which the magnitude of a non-contact force depends?
Answer :
The magnitude of a non-contact force depends on distacen of separation of two bodies.
Magnitude of force decreases as the distance increases
Question :
The separation of two masses is reduced to half. How is the magnitude of gravitational
force between them affected?
The magnitude of gravitational force of the two masses will
become four times as gravitational force varies inversely as
the square of distance separation.
State is very clear command, they
might only state it in their own sentence
or they show how to state it in equation
2. Measure implies that the quantity concerned can be directly obtained from suitable
measuring instrument, e.g angle using protractor
Measure, here clear that student
has to get a value of a quantity
by using correct measuring
instruments. Especially during
practical. However students
might still confused about
reading and measurement.
3. Sketch (applied to graph work) implies that the shape and/or position of the curve
need only be qualitatively correct. However, candidates should be aware that,
depending on the context, some quantitative aspects may be looked for, e.g. passing
through the origin, having an intercept, asymptote or discontinuity at a particular
value. On a sketch graph it is essential that candidates clearly indicate what is being
plotted on each axis.
Students may have data
from preveous questions,
and from that they may
able to plotted on the graph
4. Suggest use two main contexts. It may imply either that there is no unique answer or
that candidates are expected to apply their general knowledge to a new situation.
Suggest here clearly ask
students to applying their
knowledge and idea, in this
case they may come up with
conservation of energy.
5. Discuss give critical account of a point involves in a topic, and in this activity
students must have a good knowledge and understanding regarding the topic.
e.g
Questions:
Discuss some of the uses of gamma rays and x-rays in the diagnosis (detection) of
medical conditions and diseases
Answer :
Gamma rays are used in medical tracers; these allow medical staff to investigate
processes within the body . These scans rely on the fact that gamma rays (are weakly-
penetrating and can) pass easily out of the body. X-rays are used to produce images of
suspected broken bones since they pass easily through soft tissue but are absorbed
effectively by bone .
