SolidWorks 2014: Dimensioning Tips

This document provides tips for dimensioning sketches used for revolved features in SolidWorks. It recommends selecting the centerline and object to dimension, then placing the dimension on the opposite side of the centerline for a diametral dimension or the same side for a radial dimension. Once the first dimension is added, SolidWorks will default to that type of dimensioning. It also advises ensuring sketches are fully defined by checking for the minus sign when rebuilding sketches.

SolidWorks 2014 Tip-Of-The-Day

Revolves and Revolved Cuts:

When creating a sketch for a revolve or a revolved cut, there is a dimensioning trick that will
help clarify the dimensioning process.

While in the sketch mode and dimensioning features to be

revolved:

a) select the centerline (axis of rotation),

b) select the object to be dimensioned,

c) place the dimension on the opposite side of the center

line to get the diametral dimension. Steps a & b can be
in reverse order.

To get the radial dimension of the feature, follow steps a

& b from above , and then place the dimension on the
same side of the center line as the object being
dimensioned.

Once you have placed your first dimension, SolidWorks

“assumes” that your next dimension will follow the same
criteria as the previous dimension and will automatically
default to that type of dimension.

This is true for a diametral dimension or a radial

dimension. To exit this feature, press the escape key.

Always make sure that your sketches are fully defined.

When you rebuild the sketch, the minus (-) sign should
go away.
