Collaborative Lesson- Moon Phases
Grade- 2nd
Content Standard- S2E2. d. Use data from personal observations to describe,
illustrate, and predict how the appearance of the moon changes over time in a pattern.
(Clarification statement: Students are not required to know the names of the phases of
the moon or understand the tilt of the Earth).
AASL Standard- 1.B.3- Generating products that illustrate learning.
Essential Question- What are the phases of the moon?
Weakness Identified- 7 struggle with informational and literature comprehension skills
and phonics.
Differentiation- EFK interactive lesson can be read to students or they can read it
themselves.

Lesson- Reviewing the Phases of the Moon
Using the Curated Set and Smart Board the media specialist will read the book The
Phases of the Moon by Jasmine Hall on Story Jumper. Students will watch The Moon
and its Shape from PBS Kids on the Smart Board.
To address the weakness the media specialist will be reading aloud, which is an
important part of balanced literacy, read correctly, and set the purpose of reading the
story, which is informational. During the story the media specialist will use questioning
techniques to build upon unknown vocabulary.
Activity-
The teacher will review the phases of the moon with students using the Oreo Activity
Sheet. Students will demonstrate the different phases of the moon using Oreo cookies.
The teacher and media specialist will assist students and observe. Once students finish
the Oreo activity, using their Chrome books they will get on Symbaloo and watch the
interactive lesson on Moon Phases by EFK. They will take the quizzes at the end of the
lesson for a review.
Assessment-
Students will finish up the lesson by getting on Kahoot and take the assessment on
moon phases. The teacher and media specialist will analyze the data from the
assessments.
