Aseg Inc: Aircraft Structures Assignment

This document contains an assignment for a 5th semester aerospace engineering course. The assignment contains 8 questions related to analyzing aircraft structures and determining stresses, displacements, and forces in pin-jointed frames. The questions cover topics like strain energy, complementary energy, determining joint displacements in frames, analyzing frames under loads, finding member reactions and stresses, calculating joint deflections, and using energy methods to determine member forces. S. QUESTIONS Course Knowledge

No. Level
Outcome
Define Strain Energy and Complementary Energy with an Example? Explain
1 CO2 L1
the principle of stationary value of the total complimentary energy
Find the magnitude and the direction of the movement of the joint C of the
2 CO2 L2
plane pin-jointed frame as shown in Figure-1. The values of L/AE for each
member are 1/20 mm/N.
Find the magnitude and the direction of the movement of the joint C of the
3 CO2 L2
plane pin-jointed frame as shown in Figure-2. The values of A = 1200 mm2
and E = 200000 N/mm2 is same for all the members.
4 The figure-3 shows a plane pin-jointed framework subjected to vertical forces CO2 L2
as shown. The frame is supported by a pin joint at the left end and by rollers at
the right hand end. Determine the horizontal movement of joint D and vertical
movement of joint E. The area of the each members are 1000 mm2 and young’s
modulus is 210 Gpa. The length of the each horizontal and vertical member is
3 m.
5 Find the reactions and the stresses in the member of the structure as shown in CO2 L2
figure-4. The areas of the member AB, BC and BD are 4 in2, and the areas of
the member AD and DC are 3.6 in2. Assume rigid supports and E = 10,000
kips/in2.
6 Calculate the resultant deflection of the joint D of the pin-jointed framework shown CO2 L2
in Figure -5. All members of the framework are linearly elastic and have cross-
sectional areas of 1600mm2. E for the material of the members is 200 000 N/mm2.
7 Determine the forces in each member of the pin jointed structure as shown in Figure- CO2 L2
6, using energy method. Assume the cross-sectional area of each member A = 400
mm2, Esteel = 210 GPa, Ealu = 70 GPa and W = 10 kN.
8 Find the vertical displacement of point 3 on the structure as shown in figure-7. CO2 L2
Assume all members to be the same materials and to have the same cross-
sectional properties. Points 2, 3 and 4 are pinned.
