Understanding Medical Coding Systems

Dr. Patterson's office is not allowed to release patient information to the patient's husband without her consent as this would be a violation of HIPAA privacy rules. Even though he is the spouse, written consent is required to discuss a patient's medical information with anyone other than the patient. The best option would be to contact the patient directly to confirm if she provided consent for her husband to receive information.

Is it Allowed?

Dr. Patterson’s office is not allowed to release patient information this would be considered a

HIPAA violation. Even though they were speaking to the patient’s husband they are not allowed to tell

him without her consent. If she had a consent form on file, then this would be fine. The best option

would be to give Mrs. Martin a call back if they are unsure whether she gave consent to her husband.
