Horizontal Separator Sizing Guide

This document introduces a horizontal vessel sizing program. The program is designed to size 2-phase and 3-phase horizontal separators based on guidelines from API 12J. It requires the user to input process data like flowrates and densities. It then calculates residence times and liquid levels to check if design requirements are met. The program provides default liquid level constraints but also allows the user to specify their own levels or known actual levels.

Purpose Level Control Guidelines

This program is designed to assist with sizing of 2 phase and 3 phase horizontal separators. The following liquid levels are offered only as an approximate guide.
This program is based on the guidelines for horizontal separators in API 12J Where project specific level control data is available, the following may be ignored.
For explanation of liquid levels click on boxes highlighted in yellow.
Instructions for use
[Link] required process data in the 'Data Input' sheet: 3 Phase Separator
- Fluid Mass Flowrates & Densities
- Oil Viscosity 0.3D or 300mm min
- Separator operating pressure HHLL
- Separator Type - ie 2 or 3 phase HLL 1 - 5 minute holdup light
phase or 250mm min
- Separation Device LLL
- Vessel Aspect Ratio (Length/ Diameter) LLLL
D
- Level constraints (See diagrams opposite For Guidelines) Settling Height for light
phase or 300mm min HIL
There are 2 options for entering liquid level constraints: Weir
1) Default level constraints may be chosen by clicking on the 'Default Level Constraints' button 6 minute heavy phase LIL
2) User specified level constraints may be entered directly holdup or 300mm min
LLIL
- Required Oil & Water or liquid (for 2 phase separators) Residence Times
- Max allowable rhov2 for inlet/ vapour outlet nozzles and max allowable velocity for liquid outlet nozzle
Dead Oil Length
Water Nozzle 1 minute holdup
2. Goto the 'Calculations (1)' sheet by clicking on the button at the bottom of 'Data Input Sheet' 150mm from or 350mm min
vessel base
T/T Length
3. Input an initial guess for the vessel diameter based on the estimated diameter and
Separation Length
enter maximum interface and liquid levels as a percentage of the vessel diameter.

4. Hit the 'Execute Program' button and check residence times to see if requirements are met.
( Note1: the calculated default liquid levels are based on the user input level constraints)
( Note2: the program will give a warning if input dia is too small (based on user input level constraints)) 2 Phase Separator

5. If either the API criteria or other criteria is not met adjust dia and/ or maximum Oil/ Interface levels 0.3D or 300mm min
and rerun program HHLL

1 minute holdup
1. When actual liquid levels are known, these may be entered by clicking on or 250mm min HLL
the 'enter liquid levels' button in the 'Data Input' sheet. This will take the user to
D
the main calculation sheet and the liquid levels can be entered in the highlighted cells. 1 min holdup LLL
Once these are entered, go back to the Data Input Sheet and complete input.
Goto 'Calculations (1) sheet' and enter the vessel diameter. There is no need to execute 1 minute holdup
or 300mm min LLLL
the program since this calculates liquid levels based on the level constraints.
2. The water outlet nozzle is fixed @ 150mm above the vessel base. This may be adjusted to a
user preferred value by overwriting the default value in 'calculations(2)' worksheet
Water Nozzle
150mm from
Limitations
vessel base
1. Does not take into account vessel heads therefore the separation volume used in calculations is conservative T/T Length

Common questions

API 12J guidelines influence the calculation of residence times by providing a framework for ensuring sufficient holdup times for effective separation. The program must ensure that the residence times meet or exceed the API-recommended minimum residence time to guarantee separation performance .

The program incorporates user feedback and corrections by allowing users to input specific process data and adjust settings, such as level constraints, directly. Any feedback or required program corrections are advised to be sent to the Owner, as noted on the revision status sheet .

The document suggests determining the appropriate vessel diameter by inputting an initial guess based on estimated diameter and entering maximum interface and liquid levels as a percentage of the vessel diameter. The program will then evaluate if the requirements are met and suggest adjustments if necessary .

User input level constraints can override the default settings by allowing users to specify their own constraints for liquid levels. This can lead to different calculations of residence times and vessel dimensions if the user-specified constraints differ significantly from the defaults .

To execute the program and check for compliance, input process data into the 'Data Input' sheet, estimate vessel diameter, and input maximum interface and liquid levels. Run the program and check residence times against requirements. Adjust diameter or maximum levels if API criteria or user-entered criteria are not met, and rerun as necessary .

The vessel aspect ratio (Length/Diameter) is significant as it affects the separation efficiency and design space of the separator. A higher aspect ratio may lead to improved separation due to increased flow length but requires more physical space. The default aspect ratio in the program is 3.0 .

The separation volume is calculated conservatively by not accounting for the volume taken up by vessel heads, therefore possibly overestimating the required separator volume. This approach is used to ensure that the separator capacity is not underestimated, leaving a margin for error in vessel design .

The primary purpose of the horizontal vessel sizing program is to assist in the sizing of two-phase and three-phase horizontal separators. The program is based on the guidelines provided in API 12J for horizontal separators .

The limitations include not accounting for vessel heads, resulting in conservative calculations, as the separation volume is overestimated. This limitation affects the determination of separation volume, potentially leading to an oversized separator design .

Holdup times are crucial for ensuring adequate separation and preventing gas blowby. The document suggests a default holdup time of 1 minute for both oil and water . Proper holdup times ensure sufficient separation and aid in calculating the required length and diameter of the separator .
