Sociolinguistics is the study of the complex connections between language and society. It looks at how social variables like age, gender, ethnicity, education and class help determine how people use language. Sociolinguists study how language varies across social groups and how it is used to establish social relationships and express social and cultural identity. They examine both synchronic language variation at a given time period and diachronic variation over time under the influence of social factors.
