[Genaral- purpose Computers]2
It was the fusion of automatic calculation with programmability that produced the
first recognizable computers. Charles Babbage 1837 was the to conceptualise and
design a fully programmable mechanical computer [known as the anatytical
engine]. Due to limited finances and Babbage’s inability to resist tinkering with
the design, the device was never completed.
Herman Hollerith invented the recording of data on a machine readable medium
in 1880s. Prior uses of machine readable media, above had been fro control, not
data. After some initial trials with with paper tape, he settled on punched cards
which he processed with the tabulator, and the keypunch machineshe inveted.
These three inventions were the foundation of the morden information
processing industry.
