Assignment Problems
1. A flat plate having a base area of 0.5 m2 and mass 10 kg slides down a 300 inclined plane over a 0.1 cm uniform
layer of oil with µ = 0.05 Ns/m2. Determine the expected steady state velocity.
2.
3. A manometer connects an oil pipeline and a water pipeline as shown in the figure. Determine the difference in
pressure between the two pipelines using the readings on the manometer. [Link] = 0.86 and [Link] = 13.6.
4.
5. Given the velocity field:
Calculate the velocity acceleration of a particle at (3, 0, 2) at time t = 1.
6. For a two dimensional potential flow, the velocity potential is given by
Determine the velocity at point (2, 3). Determine also the value of stream function at point (2, 3)
7.
8. If u = ax, v = ay and w = -2az are the velocity components for a fluid flow, check whether they satisfy the
continuity equation. If they do, is the flow rotational or irrotational? Also obtain equation of streamlines passing
through the point (2, 2, 4).
9. Water flows in a circular pipe. At one section the diameter is 0.3 m, the static pressure is 260 kPa (gauge). the
velocity is 3 m/s, and the elevation is 10 m above ground level. The elevation at a section downstream is O m, and
the pipe diameter is 0.15 m. Find the gauge pressure at the downstream section if frictional effects may be
neglected.
10.

12.
13.
Determine the total energy loss between the two reservoir.
