Transverse Beam Structural Analysis Guide

The document outlines the structural design and analysis of beams for a construction project, specifying the types and dimensions of beams to be used. It includes calculations for dead loads, live loads, and ultimate loading, as well as the design parameters for transverse and main beams. The analysis confirms the suitability of W 10 x 45 for the transverse beam and W 12 x 170 for the main beam based on the calculated forces and allowable limits.

DOCUMENTATION

For the main beam carrying all loads , use I-section beam, W 12 x 170
For the transverse beam carrying the weight of the longitudinal beam,
use I-section beam, W 10 x 45
For the longitudinal beam, use C-section beam, C 5 x 9

Dimensions:
length, l = 30 m 98.43 ft
width, w = 4m 13.12 ft
thickness, t = 0.15 m 0.49 ft
slab finish thickness, f = 0.03 m 0.08 ft
interval of transverse = 1.5 m 4.62 ft

STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS

Slab Loadings:

Dead Load Wc = 23.6 kN/m³

For weight of slab: Wc x width of floor slab x thickness of slab =
Wc x w x t = 23.6 x 4.0 x 0.15 = 14.16 kN/m
For weight of slab finish: Wc x width of floor slab x thickness of slab finish =
Wc x w x f = 23. 6 x 4.0 x 0.025 = 2.36 kN/m

Total Dead Load, Wd = 16.52 kN/m

Live Load Service Load = 4.8 kPa

For live loading: Service Load x width of slab =
Service load x w = 4.8 x 4.0 = 19.2 kN/m

Ultimate Loading Wu = 1.4 DL + 1.7 LL

Wu = [ 1.4 x Wd ] + [ 1.7 x Wl ] = 55.77 kN/m
Steel Structural Beams: Values are taken from Steel Sections Standard Table

Longitudinal Beam: Self Weight = 9 lb/ft 0.13 kN/m

30 m
Load to pass on the transverse beam for every 1.5 meter interval:
Self Weight x length / (distance interval of transverse beam + 1) =
1.59 kN
Transverse Beam: Self Weight = 45 lb/ft 0.66 kN/m

Load carried by the transverse beam is its self weight,

load from longitudinal beam and weight of slab.

Analysis on transverse beam: Analysis using GRASP

Using Ultimate Loading:

Load to pass on the main beam: Ry = 206.75 kN

Main Beam: Self Weight = 170 lb/ft 2.51 kN/m

Load carried by the main beam is its self weight and load received from transverse beam.

DESIGN PLAN

Note: There is no need to design the longitudinal beam for it does not carry slab load.
The transverse beam carry the load of the longitudinal beam and slab load.
The main beam carry the load from the transverse beam.
DESIGN

Design of Transverse Beam: Analysis using GRASP

Maximum Force = 46.48 k 206.75 kN

Design as Tension:

For: W 10 x 45
Ag = 13.3 in² rx = 4.32 in
d= 10.1 in ry = 2.01 in
bf = 8.02 in
tf = 0.62 in
Fy = 36 ksi

Pmax (allowable) = 0.6*Fy*Ag = 287.28 k Ok!

Slenderness ratio, L/r L/r = 36.46 Ok!

Provision: Main Member = L/r ≤ 240

Second Member = L/r ≤ 300

Design as Compression: Cc = 126 E= 29000 ksi

Values of k:

Ideal k 0.5 0.7 1 2

design k 0.65 0.8 1.2 2
For Compression Members, kL/r ≤ 200 kL/ry = 29.16 min
kL/rx = 36.46 max

Since: kL/r = 36.46 < 126 Intermediate Column

Fcr: Intermediate Column Long Column

Fcr = 19.46 ksi

For compression members, Pcr = Fcr*Ag (allowable)

Pcr (allowable) = 258.87 Ok!

Therefore, Use W 10 x 45
