Skill 5: Administration of intravenous (IV) medication
Task: administer an IV drug correctly and safely to a manikin
Criteria for satisfactory completion of task: when all relevant aspects of
the task, governed by the following principles, are demonstrated:
● adequate preparation of the patient and the tools for the procedure
● conduct of the procedure adheres strictly to principles of asepsis and
standard precautions
● consideration of patient safety and comfort
● adequate documentation of the procedure
● recognition of limitations and possible complications

• verify and check medication to be given
• pick up appropriate equipment (type, size,)

• Don clean gloves
4 Prepare medication and place it in a receiver
5 Bring the receiver nearer to the patient
6 Methods of giving IV drugs
a. Patient with no intravenous line or IV access (e.g. a new patient)
• identify a suitable visible vein
• tie a tourniquet above the intended site of injection
• clean the site aseptically
• insert the needle with syringe containing the medication
• pull back gently on the syringe’s plunger (aspirate) for return of blood
• inject medication slowly over several minutes until complete
• withdraw the needle and the syringe
• discard used needle and syringe into sharps bin
• remove gloves and wash hands
• document
• observe for adverse reactions

b. Patient with a running intravenous line in-situ
• check patency of IV line (drip is running)
• identify injection port on the cannula
• clean external area around port with antiseptics
• occlude IV line by pinching the tubing just above the port
• open the port
• inject the prepared medication through the port slowly
• release the pinching on the tubing
• close the port
• check that the IV line is flowing
• remove gloves and wash hands
• document
c. Patient with intravenous access, but no line (capped cannula)
• identify the port of the IV access
• clean external area around the port aseptically
• open the port
• inject the prepared drug through the port slowly, follow up with 2-3 cc of
heparinized saline slowly
• close the port
• check site of insertion
• remove gloves and wash hands
• document
