Stairwell 87 Pressure Calculation Report

This document contains design calculations for pressurizing the stairwell of a 32-level building. It provides input data on the building dimensions and materials. The calculations determine the required airflow rate to properly pressurize the stairwell. Two pressurization methods are considered: simple pressurization requiring 5.771 cubic meters per second of airflow, and Canadian pressurization dividing the stairwell into opened and closed sections and requiring a total airflow of 9.675 cubic meters per second. Height and pressure limits are also checked to confirm satisfactory pressurization is possible within established safety standards.

Q Flow rate of the pressurization air = 5.771 m /s (= 12229 cfm)

5.b Canadian stairwell pressurization:

In this system, an exterior stairwell door opens automatically uopn system activation. In addition, the lower
two floors will be considered opened, while the others doors will be considered closed.

I. Opened doors section:

Pressure difference at the bottom of the section = 12.4 Pa
Pressure difference at the top of the section = 16.75 Pa
Flow factor = 3.198 m/s
Open stairwell flow area = 0.975 m2
Effective flow area = 0.088 m2
Flow rate from this section = 0.562 m3/s (= 1190 cfm)

II. Closed doors section:

Pressure difference at the bottom of the section = 18.97 Pa
Pressure difference at the top of the section = 92.83 Pa
Flow factor = 6.144 m/s
Effective flow area = 0.032 m2
Flow rate from this section = 5.924 m3/s (= 12552 cfm)

III. Exterior stairwell door:

Pressure difference at the exterior door
(~ at 1.5m height) = 15.2 Pa
2
Open exterior stairwell door effective flow area = 0.975 m
3
Flow rate from this section = 3.189 m /s (= 6757 cfm)

The total flow needed to pressurize the stairwell

at the above conditions is the sum of these three
