LNCT Mid Sem Exam: Refrigeration & A/C

This document contains 4 questions regarding refrigeration and air conditioning concepts. Question 1 asks about calculating the COP and work required for a Carnot refrigeration cycle operating between 270K and 300K. Question 2 asks about determining the COP and net refrigeration effect for a reversed Joule refrigeration cycle operating between pressures of 1 and 5 bar. Question 3 asks about determining the COP and capacity for a vapor compression refrigerator operating between pressures of 60 and 25 bar. Question 4 asks to explain the working of a system used to produce dry ice.

MID TERM- I
SUBJECT- REFRIGERATION & AIR CONDITIONING
Subject Code. ME-803 Time Duration -1:30 Hours
Note- Attempt All Questions Compulsory.
1. A Carnot refrigeration cycle absorbs heat at 270 k and rejects it at 300 k.
(i) Calculate the coefficient of performance of this refrigeration cycle.
(ii) If the cycle is absorbing 1130 kJ/min. at 270 k, how many kJ of work is required per
second?
(iii) If the Carnot heat pump operates between the same temperatures as the above
refrigeration cycle, what is the coefficient of performance?
(iv) How many kJ/min. will the heat pump deliver at 300 k if it absorbs 1130 kJ/min. at 270
k. 5 Marks
2. In a refrigeration plant working on Bell Coleman/ reversed Joule cycle, air is compressed
to 5 bar from 1 bar. Its initial temperature is 10℃. After compression, the air is cooled up
to 20℃ in a cooler before expanding back to a pressure of 1 bar. Determine the theoretical
C.O.P. of the plant and net refrigeration effect. Take Cp = 1.005kJ/kg k and Cv = 0.718
kJ/kg k. 5 Marks
3. A vapour compression refrigerator works between the pressure limits of 60 bar and 25 bar.
The working fluid is just dry at the end of compression and there is no undercooling of the
liquid before the expansion valve. Determine:
(i) C.O.P. of the cycle
(ii) Capacity of the refrigerator if the fluid flow is at the rate of 5 kg/min.
