Dubai, United Arab Emirates Rev. No. 0 Date 29-Nov-04 Date 30-Nov-04
Total number of car parking spaces 450
Percentage cars in operation (%) 40%
Average CO emission rate per car per hour ER (gr/h) 219.6
Average car operation & travel time T (secs) 120
Acceptable CO level COmax (ppm) 25
Total floor area of car park Af (m²) 8300
Reference generation rate GRo (gr/hm²) 26.8
Correlation coefficient (25ppm) C 0.000692
Average height of car park h (m) 2.75
Calculations
Number of cars operating during hour of peak use N 180
Peak generation rate GR (gr/hm²) 4.76
Normalised generation rate f 17.77
Required ventilation rate per unit floor area (l/sm²) 1.48
ACH (ACH) 1.93
Technical Requirements
1) N is taken from ITE Trip Generation Handbook. Generally it varies between 3% to 40%, the latter should be used in Dubai given the high car usage and the usual practice in Dubai
of leeaving the car running for air conditioning operation. N=
2) ER can be extrapolated from the ASHRAE HVAC Applications Handbook (Chapter 12 1999). The factor given above is typically the worst case for cold starts in the summer as
Dubai is rarely colder than 32°C.
3) T can be extracted from ASHRAE Applications Handbook (Chapter 12 1999). Note higher values can be used for worst case scenarios.
4) Carbon monoxide (CO) level should be kept below 25ppm. Note the coefficient C is 0.000692l/m²s² at 25ppm. For 15ppm, C=0.001204l/m²s², for 35ppm, C=.000482l/m²s²
5) Floor area of the car park is the gross floor area.
6) Car park height is the average clear height in the car park.
