Mudstone: Composition and Classification

Mudstone is a fine-grained sedimentary rock composed of hardened mud that is a mix of silt and clay-sized particles. It can be categorized as siltstone if over half the composition is silt-sized, or claystone if over half is clay-sized. Mudstone may also include argillite, which has undergone metamorphism, or shale, which exhibits layering or fissility.

MUDSTONE

Mudstone can be separated into these categories:

 Siltstone — more than half of the composition is silt-sized

particles.

 Claystone — more than half of the composition is clay-sized

particles.

Mudstone — hardened mud; a mix of silt and clay sized particles.

Mudstone can include:

Argillite — has undergone low-grade metamorphism

Shale — exhibits lamination or fissility.

Mudstone, a type of mud rock, is a fine-

grained sedimentary rock whose original
constituents were clays or muds. Grain size
is up to 0.063 millimeters with individual
grains too small to be distinguished
without a microscope.
