Volume Calculation Scenarios Guide

This document provides instructions and examples for solving volume problems using real-world scenarios. It explains that to solve a volume problem based on a scenario, you must 1) identify the measurements given, 2) identify what needs to be found, 3) select the appropriate volume formula, 4) plug the values into the formula and solve, and 5) provide the answer with units in the context of the scenario. It then provides two example problems and solutions to demonstrate this process.

Notes

Launch: Volume Real-World Scenarios
Given a real-world scenario:
1.  Determine what measurement(s) you are given
2.  Determine what you are being asked to find
3.  Determine which formula to use
4.  Plug your values into the formula, and solve
5.  Answer with units, in the context of the scenario

Practice

A box has the dimensions 4 feet long, 2 feet wide, and 5

feet high. What is the volume of the box?

Volume = lŸ w Ÿh
V= 4Ÿ2Ÿ5
V =40 ft3

Practice
A rectangular cake has a length of 6 inches,
height of 4 inches, and volume of 120 cubic
inches. What is the width of the cake?

Volume = lŸ w Ÿh
120= 6ŸwŸ4
120 = 24w
5 = w

The cake has a width of 5 inches.
