Generalizing Functionals with Multiple Variables

This document discusses generalizing optimization problems to have multiple dependent variables rather than just one. It considers problems whose functionals depend on n dependent variables (y1, y2, ..., yn) and their derivatives, assuming the variables are independent of each other.

3 Generalization to several dependent variables

We have been considering problems whose functionals have the form 0 =
0(x, y, y′). In this section we generalize to functionals that depend on n
dependent variables, y1, y2, . . . , yn and their derivatives, y′1 , y′2, . . . , y′n . We
assume the variables are independent.2
