Reflecting on Writing Skills and SLOs

The student chose three assignments that best demonstrated fulfilling the required student learning objectives for the class. The first was a cover letter explaining how the chosen assignments fulfilled the objectives. It used specific examples and quotes to show how the objectives were met. The second was a group project on citation that demonstrated collaboration through integrating quotes selected by different group members. The third was a revised extended definition that showed rhetorical awareness, ethical research, organization, language, and design skills through defining unfamiliar terms, citing reliable sources, placing images near related text, and breaking the definition into clear subsections.

Dear Dr.

Bruce
During the semester, I have had to write many assignments and it was through these
writing that I was able to improve as a writer. These selected assignments I believe best reflect
my skills to fulfill the required SLOs, or Student Learning Objectives dictated in the class’
syllabus. The purpose of this letter will be to explain why exactly I chose these assignments
individually as the most exemplary for their purposes.
My first example of is that of my cover letter itself as a fulfillment for the persuasion
SLO. This cover letter fulfills the goal of providing the best possible material with which to
persuade the reader that I have fulfilled the SLOs. Specifically, there is the usage of specific
examples: the documents along with quotes, and the following descriptions that go into how said
examples are exemplifications of the SLOs.
My second piece to exemplify is that of my rhetorical functions of citation to demonstrate
comprehension of collaboration. This project was made by input from everyone in the group on
an online document. With the quotes supplied by the different members from their various
articles, the other members provided their thoughts on how this quote would add to our review.
This ultimately culminated in having several notable quotes from our selected sources as well as
a well unified, focused page of suggested citations.
My final document to present is that of my revised extended definition, for the fulfillment
of rhetorical awareness, ethical research, organization, language, and design. In regards to
rhetorical awareness, this document is very keen on explaining keywords that are not likely
known to the common user, including biological terms and the meaning of the species names.
Additionally, simply language is generally used to the keep the ability to understand to a
maximum. Ethical research is additionally demonstrated, with proper APA citations of reliable
sources, in addition to the proper citation of images and graphs. This ties into the design of the
definition, as graphs are placed in close proximity to their corresponding paragraphs, in order to
supplement the reader’s image of what is being discussed, such as the image of synapsids next to
the evolution of synapsid paragraph. Then there was the organization, where I broke the
definition into 2 major parts: the description and evolution of Synaspids. Within these
subheadings are a natural flow of ideas: with the description I broke each descriptor into its own
paragraph, same for each era for the evolutionary timeline. As for language, which is based on
how thoughtful and varied the text used was, I mostly kept the language simple as previously
said, though I do not use such simple language as to insult the reader’s intelligence and
additionally using scientific language that could be expected in such a topic.
In conclusion, understanding these SLOs has better improved my abilities as a scientific
writer and these writings are a testament to that for the future.

Sincerely,
Kennedy Balderas
