CIDECT Design Guide 5

Composite columns of steel and concrete, especially in steel hollow sections filled with concrete, manifest a number of major architectural, structural and economic advantages. Concrete filling lends to the steel hollow sections a still higher rigidity and load bearing strength, so that the aesthetic slender columns can bear higher loads without increasing the external dimensions. Hollow section acts as casting as well as reinforcement for the concrete.
