My Journey in Communication Skills

The student reflects on how their communication skills have improved during their four years at The Greene School. They discuss two examples where they demonstrated strong writing abilities - a research paper in 9th grade on Russia's use of energy exports that received a high score, and a first-person narrative story in a Creative Writing class that showed progress in fictional writing. The student is confident that the skills gained at The Greene School will help them to excel in their planned double major of history and economics in college, which require proficiency in both oral and written communication.

My Reflection on Communication

I have always prided myself on my writing and presentation skills. After four years at

The Greene School, I can confidently say that those skills have been greatly improved through

the numerous essays and presentations that we have completed.

In ninth grade, we were tasked with writing a paper for the final product for the “Energy

of a Revolution” expedition. I chose to write mine on Russia’s use of energy exports as a foreign

policy tool. For this piece, I received a four. However, it did not just come to me as if in a dream.

It was a long and arduous process, requiring research gathering, outlines, and multiple drafts.

However, as I said before, the result was an exemplary piece of work.

The skills I gained in ninth grade allowed me to continue the pattern of exemplary work

throughout my time here at The Greene School. A second example of this can be seen in the

work from my Creative Writing class. During the first semester, we focused on fictional stories

and poetry, some of which I have here. In particular, the first-person narrative section gave me

the opportunity to showcase my writing skills. The use of descriptive writing and the overall tone

of the piece emphasizes the progress I have made in the area of fictional writing.

I plan to double-major in history and economics at college. Both of these courses,

especially history, require people to be proficient in communication, both orally and through

writing. With the skills I have gained at TGS, I am confident that I will excel in the areas of

study that I have chosen to pursue.
