SYSTEMS DESCRIPTIONS
Models CTR-2000 and PRO-2000 are dedicated mammographic imaging systems
‘CTR-2000 features a unique tilting C-arm that contours the image receptor to the patient's
anatomy, utilizing the natural foree of gravity to make it easier to obtain more breast
tissue on the image receptor. When combined with the 76 cm SID, this feature allows the
technologist positioning capabilities which were previously not achievable,
When operating in the Bennett Automatic Controlled Exposure (BACE) mode, the
CTR-2000 and PRO-2000 systems are programmed for automatic selection of optimal
mA, kVp and mAs exposure factors based on breast thickness and type of examination
desired. An optional label printer provides complete technique information for each
exposure taken.
Models CTR-2000 and PRO-2000 operate using a single-phase 208-240 VAC, 50/60 Hz
jine input.

OPERATING MODES
The CTR-2000 and PRO-2000 Mammography Systems operate in any one of the
following three modes:
+ Manual Mode: requires the operator to manually calculate and select al! x-ray
technique and exposure factors (kVp. mA, time or mAs).
*® Automatic Exposure Control (AEC) Mode: also referred to as “Auto-time
mode", this mode uses three solid-state sensors to assure proper exposure times
on breasts of varying density and sizes. Initial kVp must be manually selected in
this mode; exposure is terminated by the AEC sensor ciccuitry.
* Bennett Automatic Controtied Exposure (BACE) Mode: also referred to as
Auto-kV mode), this mode enhances soft tissue imaging by autornatically
‘measuring/displaying breast thickness and setting initial kVp, mA, and back-up
timer prior to exposure. If necessary to achieve optimal film density, the system
will automatically increase the kVp value and complete the exposure. The final
kVp and mAs values appear on the operator ‘control panel display following the
exposure.
CONTROLS AND INDICATORS.
* Operator Control Panel: features a touch-sensitive key pad and cold cathode
LED display for direct operator access and control.
+ C-arm: features controls on both the right and left side for ease of operation.
OPERATOR CONTROL PANEL
The Operator Control Panel (OCP) serves two basic functions. It affords the technologist
complete control over system operations and provides visual indication of system status
through an LCD sereen display and LED indicators. Featuring push-button operation, the
technologist enters all information at the control panel with simple keystrokes. The
system “responds” to each entry with an audible signal, providing confirmation of
selection.
The following is a detailed description of the controls and indicators found on the control
panel. Refer to Figure 1-5 for reference as you read the descriptions.
LCD DISPLAY: This high resolution display references _ the
technique settings for kVp, mA, time, mAs, and cm
values for the compressed breast according to the
selected mode. It also references the patient's
identification number and the heat unit computer
reading.

CALIBRATE REFERENCE POINTS
SETTING THE THICKNESS REFERENCE
‘The mammography system automatically measures breast thickness and displays this
‘measurement on the LCD. The thickness measurement is also displayed on the C-arm, In
order for this measurement to be accurate, it must be based on a zero reference point for
each of the four possible breast positions.
The possible reference points are:
+ Non-bucky (or tray)
* Bucky (both linear and HTC types)
© 1.5 Magnification
© 1.7 Magnification
Zero settings for the breast positions are factory preset. These settings usually do not
require adjustment, but should it be necessary to Calibrate a thickness reference point, use
the following procedure.
1. Access the Utility Menu (see Figure 3-6),
2 Ensure that the compression paddic is in the lowest possible position for the
required reference point.
* NOTE
‘Since the compression paddle controls breast compression,
in order to accurately reset the CM reading to a “0”
reference, the compression paddle must be in its lowest
position. When the thickness reference point has been

CENTERING X-RAY FIELD TO PERPENDICULAR RAY
* nove
This procedure should only be necessary following
replacement of the x-ray tube or collimator.
This procedure involves adjusting (moving) the collimator in order to align the x-ray field
with the perpendicular ray established in the preceding procedure
1. Using the final x-ray exposure made in the previous procedure (Alignment of
‘Perpendicular Ray), measure the width of the x-ray field. Divide this measurement
by two to determine the distance from the edge of field to the centerline of x-ray
to draw the x-ray field centerline on the film (see Figure
2. On the same film, measure the distance from the centerline to the center of the
smaller of the two dots appearing on the film. Note on which side (lefuright) of
the centerline the dot is located.
3. Divide the measurement taken in the previous step by two. This value is the offset
(difference) from centerline.
4, Place a sheet of paper (large enough to encompass full x-ray field) on subtray and
tape into place.
NOTE
It ig recommanded that 2 small (6-inch) clip-on type cooling
fan be used during the following steps of this procedure to
help prevent overheating of the collimator assembly.
5. Tum on collimator light. Mark the edge of the light Field on the paper
6. Using the value for the difference calculated previously, draw a straight Hine
parallel to the centerline (on the lefUright side of centerline as noted in step 2
‘This line represents the edge of the x-ray field.
7. Verify alignmentis within 1% (0.3 inches or 0.76 om). If within 1%, no collimator
adjusiment is required. If not within 1%, proceed with next step.
8. Loosen four (4) kep nuts securing collimator assembly to tube pivot support.
IMPORTANT
A very slight movement of the collimator will result in a
relatively large movement of tho collimator light fold (i.0.,
the ratio of light fiold movement to collimator movement is
approximately 10:1. Avoid moving collimator excessively.
9. Adjust collimator position so the edge of the light field lines up with the Tine
drawn parallel to centerline (edge of x-ray field) as indicated in Figure 3-29.
10. When in proper alignment, tighten four (4) kep nuts securing collimator assembly

Service Manual
OVERVIEW
This section is designed to assist the service technicin in maintaining the smooth
operation of the Model PRO-2000 or CTR-2000 mammography system. Maintenance
schedules and procedures, utility operations and diagnostic testing procedures arc
discussed.
MAINTENANCE SCHEDULES AND PROCEDURES.
SCHEDULES
To Keep the mammography system operating properly, it must be inspected at regular
intervals, depending on the age and use of the equipment. When there is a problem, call a
Bennett-recognized service technician. Do not operate equipment until all repairs are
completed.
Periodic planned maintenance, as described in the paragraphs that follow, are to be
performed every twelve months. This maintenance is required to maintain the system in
good working ‘order and insure operational reliability. Bennett recommends that the
service technician be prepared with the standard tools and equipment required for the
service call. These are listed in Chapter 3, Calibration, of this manual. Itis also suggested
that a Service Kit, P/N M-275, be included.
MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES
devices. Observe proper grounding precautions before
o CAUTION! This equipment contains electrostatic sensitive
handling components or PCB's.
al
Maintenance procedures for the mamm:
graphy system include a sequence of mechan
and electrical checks and adjustments.
Perform the following mechanical maintenance procedures and follow with the
recommended sequence of electrical checks to verify compliance.
Visual inspection
Perform a general visual inspection, checking carefully for the following:
+ Faulty indicator lamps
+ Damaged components
+ Warming labels
* All extemal cables and connections for damage, breakage, etc.
* Performance check for faults or abnormalities,
* Check function of all switches and controls (¢.g.. OCP, foot pedals, c-arm, etc),
+ All mounting hardware to floor and wall should be tight.

MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES (Continued)
Counterweight Cables (Nylon Covered Wire Rope:
1. Clean cables with terry cloth towel or equivalent to remove any dirt or grease. DO
NOT use oil-dissolving chemicals.
2. Inspect cables for any signs of visual wear or damage. If excessive wear or
damage is detected, the cables (both of them) must be replaced. Failure to do so
could result in serious bodily injury.
3. Check cable connections for structural soundness.
Vertical Drive
1. Check that sprockets are aligned and secure
Check chain tension. The drive chain should be installed fairly tightly. with only
minimal slack. Adjust the motor mount if necessary to achieve adequate tension
(I/16" - 3/32” deflection as measured at middle of span).
3. Lubricate the chain drive using a good grade of non-detergent petroleum base oil
Lubrication of roller chains is essential for effectively minimizing metal-to-metal
bearing contact of pin-bushing joints of the chain. Oil should be applied to the
outside plate and inside plate edges, since access to pin-bushing areas is possible
only through clearances between the outside plates and the inside plates.
Counterweight Cable Pulley Assembly
1, Visually check cable grooves and surfaces for burrs.
2, Oil ball bearings (use non-acid oil only).
3. Vertical magnet brake rides against one face of pulley assembly. Brake must
provide holding power sufficient to prevent SO Ib. pull or push as applied at
subtray. Assure that this face of the pulley is dry and free from any dirt, oil or
grease.
Brake/Detent Assembly
1. Oil detent bearing (use non-acid oil only)
2. Clean deteat track.
3. Check brake clearance: 0.016" - 0.20” (released position - bution is depressed)
4. Check angulation readout belt to assure minimum deflection.
Vertical Travel Carriage
1. Oil bearings (use non-acid oil only)
2. Check tracks for dirt, grease or other debris. Clean if necessary.
3. Inspect tightness of bolted connections, especially counterweight cable
connections.
4. Run a lightly oiled cloth (non-acid oil) on bearing tracks of vertical column.

Tilt Assembly (Model CTR-2000 Only)
1. Check mounting hardware of bearing supports.
2. Check cotter pins which are located in clevis pins (one at each end of actuator).
3. Check potentiometer belts for adequate tension:
a. 1/4" wide orange belt: 5/32" to 1/4” deflection as measured at center of
span.
b. 1/8” wide belts: 0.050" to 1/8” deflection as measured at center of span.
4, Re-hibricate mounted bearing assemblies with NLGI Grade No. 2 lithium
12-hydroxystearate base grease.
Center Arm (C-Arm) Assembh
1. Check thet helical gears at the top of the compression system have grease on the
gear teeth. Use a premium grade lithium-based grease (automobile wheel-bearing
grease) with NLGI No. 2 rating. DO NOT apply excessive grease as it has @
tendency to migrate radially outward onto surfaces where it is not needed.
2. Clean the %4" diameter shafts with a dry woolen cloth. Apply @ light coating of
non-acid oil to the two outside 44" diameter shafts. Avoid excessive oiling, since
the ball bushings require very little lubrication to function proper!
3. Lightly oil the center shaft. Wipe clean with a woolen cloth. This is more to
prevent corrosion than lubrication - excessive lubrication of this shaft can cause
slipping in the compression system.
Check all hardware for tightness.
Check operation of the filter system (if equipped) and collimator.
6. DO NOT spray any lubricants into the collimator as they can adversely affect the
life of the bulb and/or mirror.
7. Check operation of the AEC slide. If necessary. silicone or Teflon spray should be
used to reduce friction
8. Check operation of AEC slide vs. LED display for accurate tracking of position,
9, Check operation of all operator hand controls.
10. Check the carbon fiber cover on buckies for hairline scratches and for minor
abrasions. These can sometimes be removed or minimized by using a mild
automobile polish. Three products that polish and fill scratches, making them
nearly invisible, are: Johnson Paste Wax, Novus Plastic Polish #1 and #2
(available from Novus inc., Minneapolis, MN) and Mirror Glaze Plastic Polish
(M.G. M10), available from Mirror Bright Polish Co., Pasadena, CA. It is
gested that 2 test be made on a location not readily visible to assure
compatibility before proceeding

AEC Technique Transfer Utility
The x-ray technique used in the last AEC exposure can be transferred to the PC. This
utility is typically used to help determine why an AEC expsure failed. In AutoTime mode,
the most common AEC failures are due to either a "kVp too high” ( which resuks in a
calculated main pulse of less than 400 msec.) or a "kVp too low” (which results in a
calculated main pulse of more than 5 seconds). In AutOKV mode, AEC failures only
occur when a high mA was selected (e.g., 140L) for a very thin breast, which, even at 22
KVp, results in a calculated main pulse of less than 400 msec. Keep in mind that an AEC
failure could also be the result of a hardware failure, such as a bad AEC sensor. Proceed
as follows:
1, Connect PC serial cable to Pl on Bucky Interface Board A9 (208261). Tum on the
computer,
2. Press the programming switch and press TEST to access the Test Menu.
3. Press the Down key next to the “DEBUG?” field the return to the Main Menu,
4. With the [Link] program running on the PC, select "Re-eive/AEC technique"
submenu from the main menu, thea press the Patient LD. button on the

5. The x-ray technique of the last exposure will display on the PC monitor's screen.
The information displayed includes kVp, ADU value of the pre-pulse and the time
for the main x-ray pulse.
6. Press “ok”; the AEC technique is saved to a text file named "aec_techrique.txt”

2THEORY OF OPERATION
_ _ Service Manual
OVERVIEW :
This section provides a theory of operation from a system block level to a detailed
individual circuit level. The center of the system is the Microprocessor Board A3. It
controls all system operations, including the serial interface with the Operator Control
Panel (OCP), mA selection, kVp control, timing functions. and built-in diagnostics.
BLOCK DIAGRAM THEORY OF OPERATION
The following paragraphs provide a block diagram level description of system operation.
Refer to the Mammography System Block Diagram locaied in Section 6, Schematics as
you read these circuit descriptions.
POWER INPUT
Input power is applied to Power Shut-Off Board A16 through a magnetic circuit breaker.
When the power switch on the OCP is closed, AC power is applied to transformer TI
‘The power shut off contains a relay latch device that applies and disconnects power to
transformer Tl, When the system has not been used for 60 minutes, the microprocessor
sends a shutoff signal to the power shut off, which latches a relay open, disconnecting
input power from the transformer. ‘The latch can be reset by setting the power switch on
the OCP or main circuit breaker off and then on. One-minute prior to automatic shutof?
being activated, the microprocessor will transmit 2 signal that will cause an audible tone
to be generated and display the message “PRESS ANY KEY” on the OCP. If a key is
pressed, the shutoff signal will be canceled, the circuit breaker will remain closed. and the
60 minute timer will restart. The Power Shut-Off Board has an intemal 30 VDC power
supply. For three-phase systems, a circuit is provided on the Power Shut-Off Board that
can detect the loss of one or more power input phase(s). If the input voltage drops below a
predetermined level, PNP transistor QI on the Power Shut-Off Board does not conduict.
‘This de-energizes relay K1 (main contactor) thereby removing power from the system.
TRANSFORMER
Switched VAC is applied to transformer T1 via the power shut off circuit, Power
stepped up or down (according to system configuration) and applied to the followi
circuits:
+ 9 VAC to microprocessor
* 39 and 18 VACto regulated power supply circuit
* 26 VAC tocollimator
* 50 VAC to Vertical Drive Board
* [Link] 90 VAC to the High Speed Starter
POWER PROTECTION/CONTROL
‘This circuit is comprised of a relay switching device (K2 back-up contacter) that isolates
input power from the current amp input circuits and the current amp output from the H.V.
tank circuits. Microprocessor signal CONT 24 VDC energizes the contactor during the
EXPOSE cycle
