Héctor Lavoe was a famous Puerto Rican singer and composer of salsa music. He was born in 1946 in Puerto Rico and died in 1993 in New York at age 46. Lavoe joined Willie Colón's orchestra from 1967 to 1974 and was one of the main artists signed to Fania Records. He collaborated with many top salsa artists and released several successful albums, including his 1987 album Strikes Back which was nominated for a Grammy Award. Lavoe had two sons during his career and ultimately died of AIDS complications.

 His last album titled Strikes Back, published in 1987 which was nominated for the
Grammy Awards
 Lavoe shared the stage with various salsa artists such as Andy Montañez, El Gran
Combo, Frankie Ruiz, Santos Colón, Oscar D 'León, Tito Nieves, Ismael Rivera
and other singers
 His first son had with Carmen Castro and he was born in 1968 with the name of
José Alberto Pérez.
 His second son had Nilda "Puchi" Román and was called Héctor Pérez Jr., who
was born in 1969 and died in 1987 when he handled a firearm.
 Lavoe died at age 46 after suffering cardiac arrest caused by the complications of
AIDS, which he acquired in the mid-1980s after injecting an infected needle.
